Hollywood Star Launches Family Festival of Fun and Games
Hollywood star Billy Boyd, best known as Pippin in Lord of the Rings, has launched The Princess Royal Trust Capital Sevens tournament to be held at Boroughmuir RFC's Meggetland stadium on Sunday 20 April.
As well as a first class rugby sevens tournament, this will be a family festival of fun and games for all ages, with half the profits to be used to support carers all over the country.
Launching the tournament with Scotland's Six Nations captain, Mike Blair, Billy Boyd said: 'I’m delighted to be launching this new tournament and am sure that The Capital Sevens will grow to become a top rugby tournament, whilst doing so much to help carers.'
The Capital Sevens will bring together the giants of Scottish rugby to compete for the tournament trophy, the Pug Webster Quaich. Last year's winners, Edinburgh Rugby, will be taking part – as will Boroughmuir, Watsonians, Heriots, Stewarts Melville, Currie and many others. In all, 16 teams will compete and those who are knocked out in the first round will compete for the consolation trophy, the Ronnie Tait Plate.
But this is no ordinary tournament: The Capital Sevens will be a day for everyone to enjoy. As well as first class rugby, there will be a back stage festival for kids featuring climbing walls, bungee runs, circus skills, sumo wrestling and the opportunity to try out many different sports. Parents will appreciate the all day bar and refreshments.
Scotland's Six Nations players will be available to sign balls, jerseys and programmes in the signing tent and will do a skills session with youngsters.
Young players will have the opportunity to compete for the Kenneth Ross Trophy, with the final being played on the main pitch at 1pm
This year's Scottish Premier League Champions, in 2002 Boroughmuir were the last amateur Scottish team to win the Melrose Sevens, when Scottish international player Mike Blair was in the Boroughmuir team. Mike is one of the many Scottish international players who will be present on the day.
The aim of The Capital Sevens is to bring together the very best players in Scottish rugby to encourage interest in the game at all levels – from junior players to enthusiastic supporters – and to raise vital funds to support carers throughout Scotland.
David Brown, Board member of Boroughmuir explains: 'The Capital Sevens will be a great day out for rugby fans and their families, but it will also be a day where we recognise our commitment to the community in which we work and play. There are carers throughout our community and we want to support these carers with proceeds from the Capital Sevens.'
The Princess Royal Trust for Carers Capital Sevens will be held at Meggetland Edinburgh on Sunday 20 April. The youth tournament begins at 09.30 and the senior at 13.30.
