Benefits Info

The Disability Rights Alliance [www.disabilityalliance.org] issue a handbook every May which has all the info re every benefit you might be entitled to - a bible for every disabled person or carer. The website has quite a bit of info on it but nothing like the handbook which is sold at a discounted rate of £14.50 to anyone on benefits - almost guaranteed to get your money back and more when you read it and see what you are entitled to!
For example: my partner recently went on to Higher Rate of DLA Care component - he had been on Incapacity benefit for just over 6 months and this meant he was entitled to the long term rate of IB from 28 weeks on instead of 52. Unless I had the handbook I would not have realised and they would not have notified us either. An extra £8.90 a week! Roll eyes emoticon

That "Disability Rights Handbook" is on the reference shelves of most libraries (if you can get there), and the CAB and other advice centres often keep copies they can refer to.

It's all in plain English, and once you get the hang of the slightly strange index, it's v easy to find the exact bit you need.

CAB first showed me it, but there was so much in it I found I needed my own copy! There is so much info and detail you'd need a lot of time in the library! Useful though if you just want to look something up.

Also does anyone know if getting carers benefit automatically entitles you to council tax benefit? Adam gets middle and low rate DLA (under review for higher and middle) and my husband works full time i also get child benefit but still cant keep us out of the overdraft, we have been overdrawn by £500+ for months now and a little help from the CTax would go a long way Yes emoticon

Tax & NI kick in when you earn above your personal allowance which will be the figure the govt allow unless you have over paid previously and they have adjusted it to reclaim - see www.direct.gov.uk-
The Chancellor has recently announced that the basic rate Personal Allowance will be increased by £600 from £5,435 to £6,035. The change will take place in September 2008 and the increased Personal Allowance will be backdated to 6 April 2008.
Carers allowance does not entitle u to CTB - that is means tested - again see www.direct.gov.uk. However, if you care for someone who is 18 or over on higher care rate of DLA and they are NOT your partner then you are discounted which means 25% reduction in CT.If you need an extra room for them eg a bathroom just for their use you can claim a disabled CT band reduction so if your house is Band D say it would be reduced to Band C.
Is your son a child or adult? When disabled people are 16 they can if they want claim Incapacity Benefit but you then lose Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit - and free prescriptions! Smile emoticon
