My 11 year old daughter is starting high school and she is a bit chunky. Think she is worried that she will get teased if she wears women's size clothing but i am struggling to find stout/generous fit school clothes. I manage to find a pair of trousers in BHS but she wants a skirt and as yet i have not been able to find one. Any suggestions please

Re: Generous fit school clothes
Mon 3 Sep 2007 09:09Hi flammed provided you some info
Back-to-school shopping is a breeze if you're looking for a girl's size 6X, junior size 7 or boy's size L.
Merchants are packed with logo T-shirts, hip jeans, hoodie sweaters and athletic pants in standard kids' and teen sizes.
But try to find the same trends in a girls' size 121/2, junior size 19 or guys' size 2XL and you'll find that many of the same companies who court young business are noticeably devoid of large sizesso, back- to-school shopping can be grueling.
For these children, the school experience is one of "ongoing prejudice, unnoticed discrimination and almost constant harassment," according to the National Education Association.
There are many good resources dealing with weight management in children.

On the flip side, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) even has kids' projects designed to help overweight children learn size acceptance.
However, the issue of helping overweight kids learn to use fashion to their advantage is largely ignored -- the big push has been for kids to either lose the weight to fit into "normal" sizes or learn to love their bodies and wear whatever they please.
A realistic approach, with regards to image, makes the most sense. Even if an overweight child is put on a weight management program, there's no guarantee that the weight will come off quickly (or even at all).
Helping big kids use apparel and accessories to look their best will not only bolster self-confidence, but help them fit in better with classmates.
Plus-size style tips
Don't let the child hide out in oversized T-shirts and baggy pants -- it isn't cool or flattering, just sloppy. Instead go for leg-flattering styles like flares or bootcut.
Do let the child wear styles and colors that he or she likes, but use some common sense. A plump girl donning Britney-type midriff-baring tops is only going to be showcasing extra weight. Instead, let the child choose a tight-fitting tank (just like her peers wear) but layer it with an unbuttoned sleeveless shirt.
Big kids tend to look older than their biological age (and some of the plus size clothing makes it even worse), so pay extra attention to keeping age-appropriate haircuts, accessories, shoes, etc.
Items that aren't size-specific (accessories, shoes, jewelry, backpacks, handbags) are the best way for overweight kids to feel exactly like their peers. Go overboard here!
Neatness counts with all kids, but for larger kids who tend to gravitate toward sloppy oversized T-shirts and jeans, details definitely count: clothing should be ironed, free of stains or tears. Shoes should be spick and span and grooming spotless.

Re: Generous fit school clothes
Mon 3 Sep 2007 10:20Flaminred, have you tried M and S or George at Asda? Sorry that's not much help, and I agree it can be v discouraging if nothing "normal" fits. All I can suggest is go for the very nearest thing to the standard uniform the others will be wearing, and cut the labels off.
If it's any consolation, your daughter will probably start a growth spurt v soon (I grew approx 1 foot in my first term at secondary school), and then she'll be much nearer "normal" size for her height. IMHO once winter comes, she'll be less reluctant to wear uniform trousers - legs get v cold on early mornings.
FAO Coffee: Wearing skimpy tops or baggy sloppy clothing etc wouldn't be an option - in the UK most secondary schools impose a uniform. The same goes for designer labels - these are often banned.

I agree with you baggy tops etc are out what I mean't about designer clothes is not for school but after school when she goes out with some freinds she wonts to look good .
As growth spurts my boy when he started S S he suddenly grew from 5ft now he is 6ft and still growing infact all his freinds are tall he will be in the 6th form when he goes back on Wednsday.

Re: Generous fit school clothes
Wed 5 Sep 2007 19:41Thank your for all your replies. My daughter has never been petite being an eight and a half pound baby and whilst she is not slim by conventional standards I would hesitate to call her fat. She is over 5 ft tall already and was the tallest child in her primary school! She is just well built all over and i dont think she will ever be skinny. When i look at other children around her she is certainly not the only larger than "average" child around

Re: Generous fit school clothes
Sun 9 Sep 2007 22:31Leaving clothes aside, it may help if your daughter does something physical , but maybe not one of the sports done at school (if she doesn't enjoy these). eg dance, fencing, trampolining, any martial art, yoga, skating, cycling etc. The main thing is to improve her self image (so that she looks & feels better in herself) , but also to help her stay in good condition for her size & shape.

Re: Generous fit school clothes
Mon 10 Sep 2007 10:53She does Jujitsu (a marshal art) on a saturday during the summer she canoes once a week she also is a member of the junior sea cadet corps and is generally quite active. We monitor what she eats and do not have sweets or biscuits in the house crisp are an occasional treat and we generally try to eat a reasonable balenced diet as a whole family.
So please do suggest that i am one of those parents who let there children eat all the wrong things and sit in front of the TV 24/7 as this is simply not the case.
