Does anybody know anything about amytriptyline ? My dad is recieving pallative care for lung cancer and is also on warfarin as he has a history of strokes. He has been prescribed amytriptyline for his headaches and not being able to sleep but I wondered if anyone had any first hand experience they could pass on?
Thanks

Re: amytriptyline
Sun 15 Apr 2007 11:48In his early 20s, my husband was prescribed that for clinical depression. As a treatment, it was effective, but some of the side effects were unpleasant. Don't get me wrong, they were trivial compared with the risk of death if the depression remained untreated, but IMHO it needs to be taken knowing at least the more common side effects. If the person taking it finds any of the side effects are making his or her life worse than leaving the condition untreated, a doctor will need to be asked to try and think of something else to use . There are often other options, and dosage can be adjusted too.
In lower doses, this antidepressant is used as a sedative, to stop children and elderly people wetting themselves, and to reduce nerve pain.
Side effects which my husband has mentioned to me:
Avoid even small amounts of alcohol or you could hallucinate!
Constantly dry mouth, sometimes with a nasty taste
Blurred vision
Impaired balance (maybe partly caused by the blurred vision)Let's hope your dad is one of the lucky few who gets no side effect unless it's a helpful one. FWIW gabapentin can also be prescribed for nerve pain, but it's neurotoxic, with several side efects, expensive, and in some areas GPs are only allowed to prescribe it with the say so of a Consultant.

Thu 19 Jul 2007 17:39my partner takes 2x10 mls at bedtime, he does suffer with dry mouth too. we have been caught a couple of times and run out, which was awful. i had a weekend full of bad tempered male!! apart from the bad mood, he was sweating profusely, although shaking and feeling cold, it was like watching someone going cold turkey from cocaine/heroin(i imagine).

Fri 20 Jul 2007 14:28Thanks for all your replies, dad had bad side effects on this - night wandering, hallucinations etc but now seems more settled on a small dose of diazepam as well as his morphine.
Thanks again.
