My partner was recently assessed and is now successfully in receipt of Direct Payments (£200 a week). We now have a problem - the limitations put on it to how it has to be spent!! Mark hasn't left the flat in around 6 months due to his worsening MS causing severe fatigue which basically means he sleeps a lot and has no energy. I am trying my hardest to talk him around to having someone in for a while so I can get out to go shopping now and again (I do it online right now). The problem is that he hates the idea of a complete stranger being in our home and also he needs full assistance in the bathroom which of course I do for him. He isn't being selfish -I know but I am gradually losing the plot!! I am stuck indoors 24/7. He is struggling more and more and I know it won't be long befor we will need more help. Any suggestions from anyone who has had to deal with this situation with a partner would be appreciated along with ideas of what to use this money on!!

Re: Direct Payments
Mon 24 Mar 2008 16:21I have come to the conclusion that DP's is the route to go, I am a very similar situation as you but we get homehelps to help with domestic, I do all the personal care myself. My wife is reluctant to let others do this, we are due reasessments and its the distrist nurse thats doing it this time last time it was a social worker. The last time I spoke to the DN she seen a need to increase the package to take in personal care.
My wife also has MS and can sleep for 20 hours in a day, I am also tied to the house as she is so unsteady on her feet.
What do you use you presently use your DP's money on ?

Re: Direct Payments
Mon 24 Mar 2008 18:43Hi, my husband would not accept external care workers so we employ a family member he is comfortable with!
I use my DP to let me sleep 2 nights a week and also 8 hours daytime to cover a work session and an afternoon shopping with my mum on a Saturday.
I wouldn't be without them now!

Fri 28 Mar 2008 12:15thanks for responding-it really helps to hear other peoples points of view!!
At the moment we haven't received any of the money as it has just been awarded. We are hoping to employ Marks sister to come and do some care for us as she does it roughly once a fortnight for free already so I can get some "me" time which I desperately need.
I don't want anyone to take over but I just need to put in place some care incase Marl gets ill and I need extra help.I never thought this would ever happen to us but I just want to feel we have a plan of action. Right now I am trying to sort out opening a bank acocunt for the money and also comprise ideas for spending the money as the ILA person is coming on Monday to see us about it.
