Hi there, I've been on here once before cus i'm my dads carer (he's 89 and being assessed for dementia) but thats not the reason i'm posting today. My youngest son Mark (14 nxt sun) has been seeing a psychiatric nurse for over 4 years because he didn't seem like he was developing like other kids his age. He had some assessments at Beighton with a psychologist and i thought we was gettin somwhere then he stopped half way through and said Mark was just immature (and then he left for another post!!!
). Meanwhile Mark continued to see the nurse at our surgery tho not often enough ,but he was still doing strange stuff. Then the nurse said he was also leaving beighton and wrote to me and said he was discharging Mark as we hadn't kept up appointments. I was so angry as i had been ringing him begging him for appointments and he kept promising to send some and never did. I put in a complaint and was asked to go and see a consultant and the new psychiatric nurse and was told they were going to do assessments again. The upshot is that he has been having the assessments for a while and now i've been told that it looks like Mark has aspergers. It will be confirmed by end of may. I am so upset cus this could have been diagnosed 4 yrs ago and he would have been getting help by now. I feel so bad cus my poor lad doesn't have friends as he doesn't know how to act with people his own age but things could maybe have been different for him if his first assessment hadn't been abandoned half way thru. Everyday is a struggle for him in one way or another and he is such a wonderful lad. I don't know how to help him now and feel useless and that i've let him down but i do know one thing and that is, I will fight to get him all the help he needs now to ensure he has a decent future. Anyway, thats off my chest now and i feel better for it. Thanx for listening. Kath

Re: I don't know if i'm coming or going!!!!!
Sun 11 May 2008 11:03Hello Kath
Your situation is very common as a lot of boys and girls are able to mask aspergers until they hit adolesence.
Am on my laptop and the battery is going low but if you google national autistic society and see if you have a branch near to where you live. They do an excellent Help course usually for six weeks for carers of newly diagnosed with asd.
I understand how frustrating it is when the so called professionals mess you around. I almost slipped through the net with my son but this was at an early age. The speech therapist said they were leaving and that I would hear from the new one. I never did for almost a year and it was through someone who knew my son being in the right place at the right time to get the process moving once again.
Also for yourself contact your local carers centre and ask them to support you with social services to get your carers assessment done. Even if you have a carers assessment due to caring for your Dad your circumstances have changed due to your son being diagnosed recently
good luck and take care

Sun 11 May 2008 17:33Hiya cath, My Adam has aspergers he's 13 and started his assessment at 8+1/2, i was told that it would take 3 to 4 years to complete as psychological disorders could br ruled out. If indeed you do get his final diagnosis at the end of may then that would sound about right. I did something quite bad to get my Adam the attention he needed
knowing he reacts to food colourings and flavours i gave him skittles 30 mins before each appointment so he was nice and ready when we got there. He bounced all over the place
but more importantly his traits really came to the fore so all could see him at his worst. I had to do it as we were getting nowhere fast and would still be under assessment to this day im sure

Re: I don't know if i'm coming or going!!!!!
Sun 11 May 2008 22:26Hi Tricia & El, Thanx so much for your replies. It's good to know that i'm not alone in this situation ( which is disgusting really as delays like this should be a rareity). Thanx for the skittles tip El, i might just try that as Mark has been remarkably well behaved during his assessments ( although he did smack his 1st psycologists head cus he was bald and called him bal head continuously for 1/2 an hour
). Mark is doing well at school and doesn't really have behaviour problems as such, he just has no social skills. He doesn't know how to interact with kids his own age (or adults either) and doesn't really have friends. His 'best friend' is his 5yr old nephew!! He seems to only feel comfortable with kids who are much younger than him or a lot smaller. He doesn't seem to have a clue about what is socially acceptable. He recently pulled a 6yr old girls trousers down in the street just cus he thought it was funny and can't understand why her family and i was so upset by it. I find it so hard to explain to people as he hasn't had an official diagnosis yet. Kids half his age don't want to play with him as he is too rough and has hurt a couple of them when he has lost his temper with them. I worry about him so much and i don't know what reaction to have if the diagnosis is aspergers or hfa. I dont know if i should be relieved at finally knowing whats 'wrong' and glad that he can finally get help. I'm so confused by it all !! They say he will have to be refered to Rygate after and i don't even know what that is really. Anyway, Im sorry cus what i thought was going to be a short reply has turned into another epic
