Bad Backs -How to handle people or get a hoist

My father's back has just "gone" again -it took me 54 mins to get him into bed - he has TIA's, the last one we think last Thurs and I was worried he would have another - I phoned my brother to ask him to help (Dad has already been up the hospital this week and didn't want another ambulance crew to come round) - he was about to get in the car when Dad finally managed to get onto the bed - it took another twenty minutes after that to actually lie down!
I have a leaflet re the local Night Owl service but we only got it Friday and I haven't been able to ring them - they're supposed to come round and help if you have trouble. I have to watch it as I still have problems after getting whiplash THREE times in car shunts, I am going to phone the OT we have with SS, plus the number we have for the one at the NNUH/Brundall to see about a hoist for when it happens again - I promise I will be pointing out to them how expensive for them it would be to look after two rather than me look after Dad! Does anyone have advice there about people with bad backs and getting them into bed? I have already checked out the DLF website and printed off their leaflet about hoist so I can start making some notes tomorrow when I've had a sleep. The annoying part of it is I used to work for a training organisation that trained people in basic care - I got in on some of the courses but had to leave work before I could do the handling one. Any advice gratefully received
Liz

Re: Bad Backs -How to handle people or get a hoist
Sat 17 Nov 2007 23:17check out with your local district nurse who you should be able to contact through your doctors. I know every area is different but where I live we have an equipment loans service. I was able to obtain a hoist for my mother before she died along with other equipment which she needed for her daily needs.
The district nurse came and give me training on using the hoist before i was allowed to use it.
Good thing about the loans equipment it was not means tested to be able to receive the necessary equipment needed. However, this excluded fixtures which were permenant i.e. stair lifts and shower rooms unfortunately they are means tested

Re: Bad Backs -How to handle people or get a hoist
Sun 18 Nov 2007 12:25Thanks for the info Tricia, much appreciated.
We already have a stairlift which our OT helped us get paid for by local council. I am ringing up the GP's tomorrow first thing as I had to call ambulance this am as Dad was in such pain - they helped me get him "moving" again and take some paracetemol as he has to watch what he takes because he's on Warfarin along with other pills. Tried phoning the Night Owls service and they told me they only do North Norfolk! That I know is wrong as I had the leaflet so tried SS, told me if I get problems tonight and can't get hold of brother they will try and get a rapid response team, or if they're busy they will phone night owls themselves...
But the info about hoist is very helpful because he has probs with his back scince he slipped a disc and I want to get something in place if it happens again.
Best Wishes Liz
