Hi
I am new on here and was just wondering if any-one carers for a teenager with mental health and drug proplems.
I have been looking after a young girl for almost 2 years now, Things every day are never the same, no sooner do I get used to one thing she is doing when another one turns up.
The most upsetting is when she is actting like a child of 6, or when she gets so scared of the dark she crys all night.
She was not like this when she first came to me but after a few family and other proplems which left her with post traumatice stress as well as other proplems.
The thing that hurts the most is the lack of understanding from many people that tell me I should tell her to leave my home as she is not my family, and the lack of help from the hospital and sosical services.
With out me this poor girl would be on the streets or worse, I love her like a daughter dose that count for nothing.
Is it much wonder that teenage suicide rate is up.
would like to hear from anyone about mental health proplems.

Wed 24 Jan 2007 07:17HI Jazzmin
Sorry love I don't know much about mental health probs.
But I'd like to say well done you for giving this young girl a home and the love and support she needs.
It sounds like she has had an upsetting and confusing time of it in the past and needs someone to cling to while she works through her memories and problems.
Has she had counselling? A youth counseller could help her come to terms with what ever has happened to her.
Hope things improve, and don't listen to those people telling you to dump her. It might not seem like it at times but you are making a difference to her life just by being there for her.
Love Cheryl x

Wed 24 Jan 2007 22:41Hi Jazz
Poor you, you have your hands full. I think you are just what this girl needs.
I cant say I have experienced mental health on a grand level, but I have two teenage boys who have mental impairment.
Its tough, and like you, I dont seem to get much support from anyone around me, and social services can seem about as useful as a chocolate fireguard.
All I will say is that she is a teenager. And my limited experience of teenages is tough enough, let alone additional problems.
All I can say is, hang on in there girl. You will win the day and I am sure in time, she will come to see that she has a true friend in you and that you are right and on her side.
Oh and if you need a punch bag, Im pretty used to that so come on and email me, and I will do my best to listen.
You go girl - youre doing a great job.
LOL and best wishes

I hope you haven't given up on the teenage girl... You maybe her last chance?
She will push you away and treat you bad ; She will test your loyalty, love and care...
She is a troubled girl and has many needs...Keep up the good work jazzmin!

Re: Anyone looking after a young person with mental health proplems
Tue 1 May 2007 19:13Hi i am new on here, i have a teenager with quite a few problems, Its very tiring looking after a child with mental health problems then you find yourself fighting the system as well.I have fought for 11 years to get the help i needed, and get him to the right school. There is no where to turn to, if it hadnt been for family members being there giving me there support i would not of been able to cope. Its true when they say your own health suffers and friends become non exsistant. But i guess we just have to plod on. My son is 15 now still not settled in school, and still has quite a lot of problems has he maybe 15 but he acts more like a toddler quite a lot of the time, still a full time job.

Re: Anyone looking after a young person with mental health proplems
Tue 1 May 2007 21:52hi my situation is not as bad as yours, my eldest lad -he is almost 15- has A.D.H.D. he has been on medication now for 6 years. without it life would be hell for all of my family. he tests me t the limit, i do have to admit that when ne shouts and screams at me i do the same back which is not the best thing to do, well most of the time i try not to shout and walk away into another room. what botheres me the most is his complete lack of confidence and social skills, because of his meds he is very withdrawn and quite immature.
i have no involvement with social services and even if i needed to from all i have heard its nigh on immpossible to get help anyway.
keep up the good work with all the love you can give her

Re: Anyone looking after a young person with mental health proplems
Mon 4 Jun 2007 19:36My 16 yr old son has schizophrenia and bipolar, and he tries to self medicate with pot or xanax. It is very difficult. He has been in middle school for five years and has failed this year also.I also find my self fighting the system. Not everyday is that bad and we have really learned alot about this disorder. At first I thought he was just a really wild teen.I handle things very differently now that I know what I'm dealing with. And he is my first born child, son.I try to teach him about the disorder,I make him take his meds everyday,I help him with tasks, I give him his quiet time,I monitor his calls, his friends. He has been in trouble with the law. It's all a lot to deal with.Things are getting better.
