The Princess Royal Trust East Lothian Carers Centre

Rural Project

It is estimated that 23% of East Lothian residents live in small rural communities.

Carers in rural areas face particular isolation due to:

  • The long distances and cost of travel from services and sources of support.
  • Public transport being infrequent and expensive.
  • A reluctance to make their situation public or approach services for help.

In 2002 CoEL began a 3-year Rural Carers Project to help carers in villages and outlying farms/settlements of East Lothian carry out better their caring roles, and to create continuing systems for carers in rural communities to support each other.

The Rural Project is funded by the Scottish Executive and NHS Lothian.
