The Princess Royal Trust Knowsley Carers Centre

Carers Emergency Card

What is the ‘Carers Emergency card’?

This is a scheme run jointly with Local Solutions and VNC Lifeline.
The card is a credit card sized card, that is carried by Carers. It is used as an instant source of identification in case of an accident. The registration and telephone number are linked to a database at VNC LIFELINE’S Control Centre, where help can be co-ordinated to assist the dependent person, while the Carer is receiving attention.

Why was the scheme developed?

Carers expressed uncertainty and concern about what would happen if they were out alone and had an accident. Some Carers carried a piece of paper but still felt unsupported. They expressed the need to have a co-ordinated system of response that did not totally rely on their neighbours or relatives.

How does it operate?

A Carer registers on the scheme by being offered the form from Social Services or The Knowsley Carers Centre. The Carer gives information in confidence about the dependent person, where they live, what agencies are already involved, and who would be available to help in an emergency. These details are entered on a computerised database, and the Carer is issued with a laminated card, Stating:

‘Someone depends on me, in an emergency phone Lifeline or the Police’

They are encouraged to carry the card in a prominent place and keep it with them at all times. The only identification is the registration number.

In an emergency, a call is received and the control centre will respond by co-ordinating assistance for the dependent person.

The Carers feel more supported.

They are less anxious about going out.

They have piece of mind that their situation is understood.

It is an insurance policy for Carers.

It offers support 24 hours a day.
