Young Carers Service

Welcome to the Young Carers Project

Hi there!

Do you know who a Young Carer is?

It is a young person under 25, just like you, who helps care for a relative at home who is ill, disabled, elderly or who has a mental health or alcohol/drug problem. The person looked after could be your gran or grandad, mum or dad, or your brother or sister.

Does this sound like you?

If it does did you know that in Sutton there is a Young Carers Project especially for you.

David Tate runs the Young Carers Project. He is there to give you support and information and to try to help you in coping with your caring role. When you meet him you will find that he is fun, friendly and easy to talk to. Young Carers often find it is helpful to have someone outside the family who they can chat to. Someone who knows how difficult it is at times being a Young Carer with all the responsibilities and feelings.

How about joining the Young Carers Project? The Project has lots to offer you

There is a programme of regular activities throughout the year. A chance to have fun, meet other Young Carers and have a break from caring. Check out the "What's On?" web page to see what is happening at the moment.

During the year there are usually some days and weekends away and often special holiday activities

Every so often we get together to look at things like coping with bullying, gaining confidence, self esteem and becoming less shy.

There is a Young Carers Forum that meets every two months where Young Carers share ideas, make suggestions and help to make sure that the Project offers Young Carers what they want. This is always followed by a social activity.

Every two months a newsletter called "Cool News for Young Carers¨ will drop through your post box at home.

There is a Young Carers Library at the Carers Centre with lots of books and videos about caring. Also two networked computers that are there for you to use for school project work, to search the web, e-mail friends or just play games.
