Simplyhealth Caring Award winners 2007

The Simplyhealth Caring Awards acknowledge the excellent work that GPs, GP Surgeries and Primary Care Trusts are doing for unpaid carers up and down the country. This year the awards were presented at an event on 29 October 2007, Recognising Carers: Partners in Primary Care.

In presenting the Carers' Choice award Sheila Dent said:

"After reading Isobel’s letter nominating Dr Sullivan we knew we had a clear winner. Dr Sullivan is an outstanding caring GP and has offered Isobel and her family support for many years. It was apparent that Dr Sullivan went above and beyond the call of duty as a GP to support Isobel in her caring role."

Dr Sullivan and Isobel Strang each received £250, however both asked that their combined award went back into helping carers by giving the £500 to the Supported Living Scheme, run by Home Farm Trust.

Simplyhealth Caring Surgery - Gold: Dr Pugh & Partners in Kilmarnock

Sheila Dent explained: "Dr Pugh & Partners offer outstanding support to the carers in their area and fully deserve to win the Simplyhealth Gold Caring Surgery Award. They employ a GP liaison worker from East Ayrshire Carers’ Centre, run a prescription delivery service and offer home visits if necessary. They have also formed an integrated team that meet every fortnight to discuss the needs of their carers"

Simplyhealth Caring Surgery - Silver: Court Thorn Surgery in Carlisle

Jenny Sutton, Practice Manager at Court Thorn Surgery says: "We are delighted to receive the award, as we acknowledge that carers should be recognised as both patients and individuals. We feel that there is much more to do and it's by working in partnership with Eden Carers, Penrith that Court Thorn Surgery is striving to improve the needs of carers."

Simplyhealth Caring Surgery - Bronze: The Cedar Brook Practice in Hayes

The Cedar Brook Practice was commended for its strong links to Hillingdon Carers’ Centre and as staff are all fully briefed to help identify carers.

Simplyhealth Caring PCT Award: Sandwell Primary Care Trust

Sandwell Primary Care Trust received the Caring PCT award as they represent a shining example of what can be done:

  • 95% of their practices have carers’ registers to help identify carers
  • they provide funding advice and information about carers
  • there is strong evidence of sustained development over a number of years

Simplyhealth Caring Highly Commended PCT Award: Birmingham East & North Primary Care Trust

Birmingham East & North Primary Care Trust were awarded a Highly Commended certificate as they:

  • have achieved a high standard in a short time
  • have implemented a long-term strategy for carers
  • already collect comparative data
  • look after their own staff who are carers

The judging panel consisted of Dr Malcolme Stone, Dr Chris Steele and Kim Stone.
