The Princess Royal Trust for Carers comment on new report on carers for people with cancer

Macmillan Cancer Support has launched a report calling for more support for carers for people with cancer, which estimates that there are more than one million people providing valuable help and support. The charity is calling for more to be done to help carers.

Liz Fenton, Chief Executive of The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, said: “We welcome this report and the valuable picture it paints of carers. It does not surprise us that there are so many people caring for cancer patients, particularly as it is estimated that one in three people will develop cancer at some point in their life.

“What the report highlights, though, is that this valuable unpaid care comes at a price. Almost half of the respondents (46%) stated that caring had affected their own emotional health and well-being and 15% reported an impact on their finances. It is absolutely vital that there is funding in place for services that support carers and that those supporting people with cancer are made aware of Carer’s Allowance and Carers Assessments.”
