Young Carers Grant Programme 2010

Nearly £1.1 million has been awarded to 15 projects across the UK as part of the third programme of funding received from Comic Relief to be managed by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers for the development of services for the most vulnerable and isolated young carers across the UK.

The Young Carers Grants Programme 2010 continues to prioritise high quality direct support to the most vulnerable young carers by identifying projects aiming to work with those who may be hidden due to the stigma attached to the person they are caring for; or are from under represented or excluded communities such as ethnic minority, refugee communities or rural areas.

About the funded projects:
The fifteen projects are located in London, the North West, North East, East and South West of England, West Midlands, Yorkshire/Humberside, Scotland and Wales.

Amongst the successful applications are projects focusing on increasing the support to young carers of siblings in rural areas; working with 16-24 year old young carers in a transition project aiming to increase their access to age appropriate services; supporting young carers of those affected by parental mental health and substance misuse; working with young carers 14-19 years who are caring for an adult relative with a progressive and/or terminal illness; awareness-raising training projects; support for African young carers looking after a person with HIV and development of existing Young Champions programme to be culturally appropriate for BME young carers.

Hi Samantha,

Thank you for your comment. Could you please send your question to support@carers.org who can personally assist you with your concerns or direct you to the right resources. I will let them know any way about this too (but they might need your email address to respond back to you).

Please feel free to drop them a line at any point too.

Thanks!

Hi Samantha, Thank you for

Hi Samantha,

Thank you for your query.

As Fiza mentioned, please email us at support@carers.org if you wish to be more specific about what kind of help you're seeking. Whilst we're not experts on benefits or entitlements, and have no direct access to funding, we would be happy to inform you of what agencies can help you.

Is there a Carers' Centre near you? Click here to find a local centre affiliated to the Princess Royal Trust for Carers: http://www.carers.org/carers-centres/find-your-local-centre. Alternatively, search the internet for "carers" and the name of your town or area (for example, "Watford carers") to find out if a local carers' centre, connected to another organization, exists near you. Support workers at carers' centres often provide a wide range of expertise, support and practical help; and they often know about funds carers might qualify for.

You asked about working part time and Carers Allowance. According to the Directgov's website, you would be entitled to Carers' Allowance if you do not earn more than £100 per week (after deductions). Please visit the Directgov's website (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/CaringForSomeone/MoneyMatters/CarersAllowanc...) for more information, and we strongly recommend you speak with one of their expert advisors about your particular circumstances.

Have you looked at the Carers.org discussion boards at all? This is where you'll find the site's online community of carers discussing everything that affects their lives. As expected, the question of part time work and Carers Allowance has been discussed there quite few times (you can find these by searching the forums). Click here to search and read more http://www.carers.org/forums.

Finally, you may be interested in the weekly Thursday night webchats from 7 - 8pm for carers your age. You will need to register online (which is very quick and easy!) to get into the chatroom or write on the discussion boards (http://www.carers.org/user/register).

Thanks for your query Samantha.

Best wishes to you and your partner,

Online support team,

Hi there Charley, We're sorry

Hi there Charley,

We're sorry to hear that things are so difficult for you; it can be so hard to be caring for a parent and trying to do the normal things someone your age would like to be doing too.

We wondered if you'd heard about YCNet? It's a website we have just for young carers a similar age to you. We have a chatroom and discussion boards where you can get to know other young carers. There's also an Agony Aunts page where you can get advice from the youth workers on the YCNet Team. If you'd like to have a look just follow this link: www.youngcarers.net

We hope things get a bit easier soon Charley and we hope you find YCNet helpful.
