The Sunday Times Young Carers Campaign

The Sunday Times Young Carers Campaign: They care. We think you will too was launched today to raise money for our work with young carers and increase awareness of the issues, as well as encouraging professionals such as teachers to identify and support young carers with whom they come into contact, before they become overwhelmed or isolated.

The 2001 census estimated that there are 175,000 young carers in the UK, including 13,000 caring for over 50 hours per week. However The Princess Royal Trust for Carers believes that the real number is much higher, with many young carers remaining 'hidden'.

The census makes no mention of alcohol or drug problems and due to the stigma attached to these conditions, these young carers are particularly hard to reach. Some do not come forward because they and their families are frightened of outside interference and that they may be split up. Many do not even tell their teachers or friends. Added to a lack of awareness amongst many professionals and patchy support services these factors lead to vulnerable young carers remaining 'hidden'.

Caring can have a dramatic effect on their lives. Almost a third of young carers have serious educational difficulties at secondary school with many failing to attain any qualifications. They may need to take time off from school to care for someone and can fall behind with their school work. In addition to this, young carers often experience bullying and isolation from their peers.

Yet schools are often unaware that there are young carers in their midst. Of the young carers we currently support, up to 75% of their schools did not realize they were a young carer.

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers has 83 young carers’ services that currently support over 15,500 young carers across the UK. These young people may be looking after relatives with a range of issues, from mental or physical illness, disability to alcohol or substance misuse.
