£70 Christmas bonus for carers

The Chancellor of The Exchequer, Alistair Darling, has announced a one-off payment of £60 for recipients of benefits including Carer’s Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance and State Pension.

The bonus is being paid on top of the 2008 £10 Christmas Bonus payment and will be transferred between January and March.

The extra money takes the total Christmas Bonus payment to £70 for Christmas 2008.

Mr Darling has made the announcement as part of the Pre-Budget Report, the government's annual economic forecast.

The sum will be paid automatically, carers do not need to apply for the additional amount.

The qualifying week for the Christmas bonus will be the week commencing 22nd December and the payment will not be treated as an overpayment.

If a carer becomes newly entitled to one of the qualifying benefits after the first week of December and are in receipt during the week of 22 December, they will get the full £70.

The qualifying benefits are:

- State Pension
- Non contributory state pension (Over 80s pension)
- Pension Credit; Attendance Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance; Incapacity Benefit at the long term rate (currently £84.50)
- Severe Disablement Allowance
- Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (the support or work components)
- Widow’s Pension; Widowed Mother’s Allowance and Widowed Parent’s Allowance
- Unemployability Supplement and/or Constant Attendance Allowance with Disablement Benefit.

A dedicated number 0800 141 2591 has been set up to deal with enquiries.

Hi Helen, The government

Hi Helen,

The government website suggests that the current amount is £10 (see the link above). If you are in receipt of Carer's Allowance and haven't received this, you can contact the Carer's Allowance Unit to discuss this further. The number to call is 0345 608 4321.
