I have a client whose partner has fibromyalgia, tried applying for DLA, ended up at tribunal and was turned down. Is there anyone out there who has managed to get DLA for this condition and if so how?!

Thanks

Fibromyalgia Syndrome is not ineligible for DLA, but many patients struggle to get it because their symptoms vary so much making it hard to prove how much care is needed and also because many doctors do not support claims.

I'm also involved with FibroAction, a charity for Fibromyalgia Syndrome - if you contact them, I'll be able to help if I can. The website is www.fibroaction.org

like all the conditions which come under the umbrella of arthritis treatments, DLA is unfortunatley such a hit and miss affair, there seems to be no uniform answer.
as Linz said above, the sympotms and effects can vary so much within the person, never mind between people it makes it very difficult to assess. i think all you can do is keep fighting for it..unfair i know, but the only way it seems.

hi teesgale, I am sorry you have been unsuccessful with claiming for DLA it's terrible to be misunderstood and not taken seriously. My daughter has both fibromyalgia and ME and struggles a great deal with her pain. Luckily she has had sympathetic doctors who have signed her application forms but I do know that it is, as others say very hit and miss. It's the luck of the draw whether you find a doctor who will stand up for you. I have heard horrible stories of people with ME for example who have not been believed, even by thier own families and have had to suffer very cruel accusations.
It's bad enough being in pain and crippled with a cruel condition such as fibro or ME without being denied the benefits deserved. I would try to change doctors and fight if you have the strength. By the way, my daughter takes a product called "Fibrosleep" it's all natural and it has greatly improved some of her night problems. Let me know if you would like information on the product (I am not anything to do with the company). I wish you good luck,
SusanG

Hi, I have this, as well as osteo-arthritis.
I was able to get DLA - as I kept repeating over and over again that each day is different, I never know when I am going to get pain, etc - the suggested help (using kitchen stool (meant tools) not very much help as I have pain in my hips.
please contact me private Smile emoticon or if you can afford it become a user of benefits and works website, benefitsandworks.co.uk also a useful website is www.fibromyalgia-support.net or try the fibromyalgia association - www.fibromyalgia-associationuk.org all worth a go.

Hi Shelley,
I noticed you said you have fibro and ME, my daughter has this so badly she can't work or look after herself. It's really hard as I am going through so much at the moment and I am her full time support as there;s no family around or willing to help. How do you cope? do you go to work? I hope you don't mind me asking. Best wishes,
Sue
