Books for charity

Hi
Does anyone know of any charities that can make use of several hundred books. Mainly paperback novels – ranging from Barbara Cartland through Stephen King to H G Wells – but also quite a few hardbacks – gardening, cooking, knitting etc. Majority of books are in good to excellent condition.
I did find one organisation online but the percentage of money raised that actually ended up with a charity seemed very low.
Local charity shops will only take half a dozen books at a time and it will take me years to get rid of them at that rate.
I’m in London but could possibly arrange delivery to the North Wales area or Liverpool / Manchester at a push.
Thanks
BlueBelle

Re: Books for charity
Tue 15 Jul 2008 22:46Hi Bluebell
Just a thought but have you thought of selling them yourself on Ebay?
As long as you put up a reserve amount and do pick up only, you could then either donate the money you make to a charity of your choice or do what I do and nominate a charity (via ebay) and donate a percentage to them. You may get a book collector or book shop buy the books.
But don't forget the reserve -like I did when selling my daughters jacquline wilson books, ended up going for 99p plus it cost me £4 postage lol-Anyway just a thought. It is easier than you think.
Take some piks as it makes your ad more attractive and people can see what theyre buying.

Wed 16 Jul 2008 07:51Hmmmmm, sounds a bit complicated to an ebay novice like me. And can't imagine any photo of a Barbara Cartland novel will make it fly off the shelves
I'll check it out though
Thanks Kerry

Wed 16 Jul 2008 19:35you would be surprised bluebelle what people will buy on ebay!
seriously.
It sounds more complicated than it actually is, as the prompts guide you thru each stage.
Just have a look, see what you think. I was a bit nervous at first but actually quite nejoyed it as i got to use my artistic talent to make my advert look good and eye catching.

Thu 17 Jul 2008 19:58another thought is if you look out for table top sales or car boot sales - a bit of work but if you sell them cheap they will go.

Re: Books for charity
Fri 18 Jul 2008 11:07Most charity shops will take them with gratitude, if you dont have any form of transporting them they will have somebody who will collect. When I was clearing out my house to move, I gave a lot of books to both the heart foundation charity shop and cancer research. Many people like us cant afford the cost to buy new and there are a lot of people out there who buy them and then return them to the shops and that way the charities recoup far more than the books are worth and the money goes to a good cause, everyone is happy and benefits.

Thu 24 Jul 2008 15:26Have you thought of; local hospital; care homes; hostels; the salvation Army. Our local institute for teh blind has an extensive library but there again the ammount needed could be lower than the supply and you don't want them hanging about!
