Benefit for named drivers

I don't drive, my son and i travel everywhere by bus (he has his favourite) a certain problem keeps croping up! Adam has a phobia about strong wind and 'storm looking' clouds, in the past 3 weeks i have had to phone my son in law to pick us up 5 times cause Adam refuses to let go of the lamp post, or curles up in a ball in shop doorways. Adam gets middle and low rate DLA i have heard that a named driver can get help with 'car costs' if they actively have to assist someone on DLA is this true? do any of you get it? what do you get? thanks for your help. i am not sure about this one. I think you have to be on the higher rate DLA to qualify. If you are on the higher rate then you can apply for a mobility car and i think it has to be in the carers name. Thats no good for you cos you dont drive! But i think your best bet would be to get in touch with your local citizens advice bureau and ask. Or maybe the DLA people themselves. If you have a social worker then maybe you could ask them for some advice. I may be wrong and as i said before i am not really sure about this one. sorry i cant help you anymore. I know what it is like to be in the situation where they are throwing right wobblers because something is 'different' or they have a fear of. I know this cos my daughter still does it and she is 16 !! It dont help when you have people tutting at you either. Cursing emoticon Drink emoticon Drink emoticon

correct me if I am wrong but I think it is if you get the high rate mobility (NOT the Care part of the DLA) you can have a car on mobility and if your are unable to drive a designated driver may apply for the car. But it does say that the car must only be used when you are using it in connection with the person with the disability not for the drivers own personal use..... but I know many do hee hee! Devil emoticon

I am in receipt of the low rate mobility due to my son needing support when out due to his lack of road safety sense. If you get the low rate out of the two mobility benefits you are not able to apply for a mobility car. However, you can use this money to pay someone for their expenses if they do take the person with the disability out and about. I use my son's mobility DLA to pay for the car fuel each week so he can get out and about in a way which he can cope with.

Also helps towards keeping my every increasing stress levels lower

Thanks you lot, Smile emoticon just found out today he does not meet the criteria and even if he did and i claimed he would have his DLA taken off him, i wasn't asking for a car just help with fuel costs or road tax. I know it sounds silly but i was only asking cause i feel like a pain in the arse for my son in law, even though he always says he doesn't mind. My son mobility pays for his bus pass, he insists on the ticket that allows him to travel on the local trains around Milton Keynes as well as the buses. Like your son mine has to be supervised every where he goes, he switches off and can only hear trains in the distance, and he uses the edge of the kerb as a train track Oh My! emoticon One week not so long ago it was particulary windy, he hates wind, and the only way i could get him to and from school was by cab,£42 on 6 cabs throughout the week. Glad to say now that he will be starting his new school soon where transport is provided due to him living more than 3 miles away.

Am not sure if many people are aware but if your child as additional needs and the school is over one mile away you are able to have transport provided through your local authority. It is children without additional needs who need to be three miles or more away.

Also if you claim any part of the mobility DLA you are entitled to a disabled travel pass free of charge for buses. However, I only know for my own local area that to travel on the Metro we need to pay a charge of £12 per year which is worth every penny if used regularly.

Oh dont get me wrong tricia the MK council gave him a pass, but it allows one journey to his school and one to home. However with Adam being an aspey we often have to get off the bus during the journey, due to perhaps someones perfume or someone playing music on there phone or the bus getting too full. Getting off the bus before our indicated stop to wait for the next bus should (you would think) not be a problem. Wrong! i have had stand up arguments with no end of drivers who refuse to let us on to continue our journey. Iv'e shown them the Autism Alert card, complained to the council, complained to to bus company, even dropped in that my son in law is one of there work colleagues, but the miserable sods still wont let us on mid journey, tell a lie 2 drivers who do know my son in law do let us on and dont even bother with our passes but the rest of them dont. Anyway Adam left his mainstreem school last week and is starting a SEN school where all the kids have Autism on the 21st so it isnt an issue anymore. Adam wont give up his Metro pass though cause i have to take him for a train ride at least 4 times a week. Roll eyes emoticon

el have you tried asking the family fund for help but if your son is aged 16 or over the family find wont help you. its www.familyfund.org they are good. my son gets transport to school and back by the local council as he has additional support needs. i get the car on motability for my son has he has no sense of danger and its his way of getting about places and he gets tired very easily he flops his butt on the ground if there is something he cant have. to have the car you need the higher mobility part of dla
