Tricia - Here is info re: Open University I said I would pass on:
website: www.open.ac.uk
This will give information on different courses, including Openings Courses which are designed for people getting back into education.
There are also sections with advice on financial assistance with fees.
Hope this is of use.

Re: OU Courses for Carers
Wed 26 Mar 2008 09:07Thanks Jane
I shall be having a good look through it over the next few days.
Next step will be deciding what course to do.
What I like about the OU courses is that they are small bite step sizes which will be about as much as I will be able to absorb at any one time; could that be a carers mushed up brain be the cause of that? who knows!
Thanks hope to catch up with you in the chat room

Re: OU Courses for Carers
Wed 26 Mar 2008 15:31i did two years of open university and i did the 60 point courses and failed both when it came to the exams my word of warning is do the 30 point courses as the 60 points are hard work when you have someone to look after as well etc i was told my my lecturer after the second year that the 60 point is like doing a nine to five job so basically at the start i never enough time to do it. It is good though you get loads of books and you will get grant etc towards things you need to do course and they are helpful etc and it does stop your brain going totally daft when i have more time i will start up again

Re: OU Courses for Carers
Wed 26 Mar 2008 15:44thanks for that advice mr tumble
I shall take that on board while thinking which course to do also I do a lot of voluntary work inbetween my caring role which I would not like to give up.
Last year I did an online funding course through the national open college which I found very interesting and challenging as it said in the title of the course was in at the deep end. We had virtual classes where everyone else who were doing the course had previously been involved in very big bids whereas I had only ever done very small ones, i.e. family fund and bids for one off pieces of equipment.
But it was because of that course I have gained the knowledge and now have more confidence that I am in the process of putting applications for funding for a project which I hope will benefit carers in my local area.

I didn't realise there were any online funding courses. Do you know if they are still running them?

Re: OU Courses for Carers
Wed 26 Mar 2008 20:38sorry I don't at this moment in time but the voluntary organisation who I do voluntary work for paid the fees. I think it cost in the region of £450 to £500 for the course which was for six weeks.

Re: OU Courses for Carers
Fri 28 Mar 2008 18:29hi tricia,
just logged on after a week away and seems like youre thinking of doingOU course?
I dont know much about them but maybe you could get some sort of grant like I do at normal full time uni? we get some grant and some loan, and obviously the loan gets paid back after youre earning about £15, 000 or so after the degree course.
Full time uni is 120 credits per year (6 modules- 20 credits each) so at the end of 3 yrs ill have 360 credits which is the degree.
dunno how it works for OU but if that doesnt pan out maybe you could think about a foundation degree which is much easier i believe.
full time is 120 credits per year and is damned hard- but itll be worth it at the end, and it does get your brain going (altho i usually feel like mine is either dead or jumping thru hoops!!!!)
I often feel like jacking it in but think about my boys and having a decent career to get them all that they need and deserve.Tricia you know you can do it.
