Your son has to be in the car--or you have to be picking him up or dropping him off.

Hi as and ex-parking attendat i can tell you alot about disabled parking. 1) your son must be in the car with you . Can be up to a £2000 fine for inaproprate use.
2) can park for up to 3 hrs on single and double yellow lines as long as there is no loading ban (look for a white plate that say "no loading say 7am-6.30pm" there usally kerb marking to go with this.
3) depending on where you are in the country put your badge expire date on display ( if not you could get a ticket and then have to appeal it)
4) in some parts of the country you can get free parking in P/D areas but must check local rules and also so resident parking areas.
If you are still unsure ask your local council what there rules are and also your blue badge book will help also.

Hi mr tumble
Watch out for non council parking areas. you could get a ticket in some of these. Read carefully at parking meters. I`ve been caught!

I can give bit of advice on this and would the best bit is as Sparhawk said MAKE SURE THE BADGE IS UP THE RIGHT WAY. It must be expiry date showing not the photo. I was new to the blue badge thing as my wife has one and we parked on side of road in Blackpool. We put the badge the wrong way up and we got a parking fine. We managed to appeal against it but please be warned. You must make sure you set the clock as well as some wardens can be funny with that too. Be aware if you vehicle is not tax exempt you would still have to pay parking fee at most hospitals. It is only tax exempt vehicles i.e motability vehicles which are allowed to park for free in hospitals my friend had blue badge but was not tax exempt and got a £40 parking fine. Most pay and display car parks give disabled people with blue badge free parking but you need to check signs. And yes the disabled person must be in the car or you must be picking them up otherwise you can be fined.

As you say yourself the badge is for your son so must be used as such ie. when he is passenger on that trip.
Do read all the tiny microscopic writting on the meters etc. wjen parking as the free parking for badge holders is sometimes hidden.
Try to be considerate as well as some peeps have to struggle on there own ot get into shops where as i wheel me mum in so i dont need to be closest to the door.
