Carers survey: sharing health information

Please click here to access the survey:
www.surveymonkey.com .

Distance Lab (www.distancelab.org) would like to hear your views on a new product idea that allows people to monitor their health, & enables them to easily share this information with their carers whether they share a household, live close by, or live far away. The main aim is to empower people to take a more active role in monitoring their health & maintain independence in their own home, & to inform carers about their well-being.

If you have any questions or feedback about this survey or line of research or if you would like to be more directly involved please contact Andrea Taylor. Her email address is andrea@distancelab.org .

Let's not kid ourselves here--the push for technology is purely and simply part of the Government's plan to get more carers and even disabled-back into work--spy in the home!!!

Thank-you for your feedback! The health monitor is not connected to NHS - it is a private product that people can use to monitor their health (e.g. weight or blood pressure). It can also be set to share information with informal carers - but only if the person chooses. The information need not be shared at all!! So, I'm not sure why you view it as a spy device? Please do write back, because I'd like to understand where you're coming from.

Hi Andrea,
sorry to sound a bit thick but is this device for the person with disabilities? Or the carer?
Is it like something my Mum in law has bought her self where she can take her own blood pressure just to keep an eye in case it goes too high?

Hi Kerry,

Thanks for your reply. It's not you - I haven't done a great job of explaining the product idea!

But, yes it is like the blood pressure monitor. Your mum in law can take her blood pressure, & the results will be displayed & stored on a separate device. She'll be able to see all the readings that she takes - so over time, she may notice trends or patterns. E.g. we know that people's blood pressure can go up when the grandchildren come to visit!

The carer will also have a unit in their home. So, for example, you would be able to see your mum in law's blood pressure readings - in your own home. But, only if your mum in law agrees to sharing the information! If your mum in law also monitors her weight, or whatever, you could also see this information.

Do, you think this sort of thing might be helpful to you in your caring role?

Hi Andrea, thanks for reply and explanation.
It would not help me as i have two small disabled children so it would be irrelevent to them. My mother in law is 300 miles away. However, I will pass this info on to her as I am sure it could be useful to her, her partner and stepson (who is her registered carer),.
It sounds like a very good idea to me, as i can imagine some carers may feel reassured if they can also keep an eye on their carees- especially if the caree gets confused with things at times.
Go for it!

Ah, so, you're not your mum in laws carer? Yeah, I can see the product wouldn't be useful to you! or your children. Please do forward the link to our survey - thanks!:

Do u mean what would benefit them health wise?
Im not too sure on the answer to that. My youngest on ritalin and soon will be on clonodin too.
my eldest just on folic acid. both on 2000mgs a day of fish oil.
But I am sure this is not what u mean.

there are many other things that would benefit them tho, eg multi sensory integration therapy, occupational therapy, physio..... and so on.

what would benefit myself and 'bloke'?
well, some peace and quiet lol.
more understanding and more recognition!
a visit from DIY SOS and allan titchmarsh
a lottery win
and me... a personal interview with johnny depp!

sorry, not much help there!
I have however emailed all this to my father in law so maybe it will help them....

Thanks, Andrea

Hi Kerry
Thanks for brightening my morning. Smile emoticon Your wish list made me smile. In our dreams eh? That Life Laundry woman wouldn't come amiss either. I'm fed up of being hit by an avalanche of stuff every time I open a cupboard!!

This looks like a great idea. My parents are both in their 80's and live 400 miles away, so I know we could all benefit from this wonderful new technology....they both have long term health issues and sometimes it worries me sick. Sad emoticon
