How do I.....?

go about applying for my house to have the front garden converted in to a drive way, and will I get financial assistance for this from someone?
When I moved to this house - from previous unsuitable accomodation in a 1st floor flat.. the council had originally asked if I needed any adjustments - as my daughter is disabled, she has full DLA and we have a motability car.
Following the move my son got his diagnosis for his disabilities also - although they are not physical. Is there a grant I can get in order to pay for a drive? Where I live people park on both sides of a narrow road - I already applied for a disabled space - which is now outside my house - but my neighbour opposite keeps parking parrallel to the space - so I cant even park in the space as no one would be able to get through if I did.. admittedly they are newly moved in and the previous people in the house didnt have a vehicle - I understand their need to park close to their house as they have four children (I have 3) but before they moved in - all my neighbours were very understanding about the access I need to my property.
Last night I parked in the space and had to put my car on the curb - which still isnt really any good as I cant get my daughter out of the car properly because of the lack of space... twice yesterday someone knocked my neighbours wing mirror - I am worried that either their car or mine is going to end up being scraped. But also would prefer closer access to my property by way of a drive as my house is quite far back from the road...

Re: How do I.....?
Sun 30 Dec 2007 15:39Hello Marion
If you are renting your home from the local authority I would contact them highlighting the problems which you face when parking in front of your house. Stating your concerns for your disabled daughter and if nothing is done you could end up with an accident which could be avoided.
I would write to them as things tend to get a response when in writting. Stating that a driveway would be the option to resolve this situation. If you face a negative response keep a copy of your letter which you have sent to the local authority who you rent your property from and send a copy to your local MP also to anyone else who is involved in the care of your daughter to support your case.
Unfortunately if you own your own property I am not sure of any grants out there but you could contact your carers centre to see if anyone there knows of anyone.
If you contact your local parking warden which details will be available on your local council web site and ask what the issues regarding disabled parking bays on a narrow road as in your situation.
I hope you manage to resolve the situation asap as I know only too well of what seems like a small issue to others can be a huge issue to the burden on a carer.
take care

Re: How do I.....?
Sun 30 Dec 2007 20:09Id like to join the chat room - but I cant seem to load it - my laptop wont even let me load java to bring it up... I already talked with the neighbours and although they said they would be considerate they havent done anything different they are still parking right opposite my house when they know I have to get sophie out of the car.... she cant climb out on her own and when she is having a bad day I have to carry her all the way to the house aswell as get the other two who are both under 7 to the house - and my son has ADD and very bad behaviour problems so it all adds to the chaos... Im having a bad day today aswell.

Re: How do I.....?
Sun 30 Dec 2007 21:041) Contact social services - tell them you urgently need an OT assessment for work to be done on your home (and what you need doing is directly connected with a disability). You will probably also need to get the work okayed by a health & safety person, but that's for them to sort out , shouldn't be a problem.
2) get the funding allocated - AFAIK theres' a grant you can get to cover most of this, all of it if your savings & income are under a certain level (CAB can give you details).
3) wait long enough and with any luck the work will get done before you stop needing it.

Sun 30 Dec 2007 21:28Thank you.... will do all of the above!
We used to have an OT - but all they suggested was being moved to a bigger house - but I dont want to move again we have moved 7 times in 5 years and I like the area I am in now.

Re: How do I.....?
Mon 31 Dec 2007 08:20You should apply to this site maybe, they have received a large amount of money , which has been donated by the public throught "This Morning Appeal". I know a large amount was going to TRAIN more counsellors, but this goes to show just how in need we are of practical help instead. A counsellor will not help you will they? I would get a costing quote and apply, because I for one would be interested to see a breakdown of monies received and where it has gone. How sad that people have given under the misunderstanding that we will get what we need from it.
