Maggie Thatcher and Dementia.

I have soft spot for Mrs Thatcher. Many years ago she responded to a home made xmas card that my daughter sent her in October !! There was no need for a response and obviously my daughter couldnt do anything in politics as she has severe learning disabilities, but a really lovely personal letter arrived! Maggie had only arrived back in Britain from Canada 24 hours previously!
Common sense tells us that anyone moneyed/famous will get the best of services and good luck to them ! I just hope this brings more awareness to people in my daughter's situation who now has dementia too and gets no help in that area at all.!!!!! Cursing emoticon

Jeanette,
I agree and I do hope that this will bring to public notice the increase of young people who are in a similar situation as your daughter or indeed this young man.

It is sad that in some areas of the UK there does seem to be help and yet in your area you are left to struggle.
All best

What I hear about other parts of the country is that though a service is provided ,the provision is with the elderly, and not younger people!! This cannot be right!! We are supposed to be having 21st century care but the reality of it is that care is getting much worse not better.
My heart goes out to that young boy and I hope and expect that because he is a child ..all the services and charities will help and support him and his family.
I can but hope!!!!

So sorry Jeanette,
I understood from the hosted chat we had with the Doncaster Mental health team that they had set up a young persons dementia service.

Please let me know if I am wrong.

That was a very interesting read Wendy. Thank you for the link. The problem lies with the fact that Early age dementia / Working age dementia, means younger people, usually around the 50 yrs age group have this sort of service set up for them .We have a similar one in my city , but unfortunately it does not include a person who also has a severe learning disability. Hense no service for a young person with Severe learning disabilities and Dementia!
I genuinely hope your service does include them but it doesn't say so. I havnt found any area anywhere that does, but will continue to look and pass on any info to our Adults and communities bigwigs!!

Thank you for explaining to me Jeanette.
I suppose you already are aware of this website but I thought if not they may have more clout behind them.

I will continue in my small way to pursue this as before.

Thank you Dawn Raider and thank you Wendy for the link.
It is a vital area for anyone who cares for a person with down's syndrome to concider ,primarily because of the lack of specialist services for them out there. !! It has only recently been acknowledged that people with D.S are living a great deal longer and consequently more and more in their earlier years are getting either alzheimers or atypical dementia. Prior to having the chance of a longer life approx 50 per cent where already being diagnosed with this terrible disease at an early age!!
So many more will be Diagnosed in the not to distant future.
and if something isnt put in place very soon many families are going to have the same nightmare experience we have!!
