Medway tax for carers travel

I'm also a member of Carers UK, and came accross this posting. I thought it might be of interest to other carers who are not on the Carers UK forum.

Please read the information on this site and sign the petition. Once one council gets away with it others will be quick to jump on the band wagon. Angry emoticon

With thanks to Alison for bringing it to our attention.

Hi Greywolf, I am appaled at this i live in Oxfordshire and we do not have this here. I would sugest you get in contact with may be Waychdog and the other BBC programme Inside Out as they cover stories like this some time. Also i do think this is a contvention of Human Rights under EU rules (but i do not know) would like to here what happens as we all have to support each other.

I live in Leeds but have still signed this as have many other carers from other areas. We all need to sign this petition, even if we don't live in Medway, as it will affect us all in the long run.

I'll keep an update of whats going on as and when I find out from Alison. At the moment there are only 20 signatures on this petition. My OH has posted it on 2 epilepsy sites as well.

I'll pass your info on to Alison who is dealing with this. Many thanks.

Here's an update on this subject as promised:

I have now contacted the bbc about this charge of Medway council for the buss passes so those of you in the south east please look out for us on inside out if they cover the story and everybody else we will have to see if Watchdog are interested or not. Lets hope that is they broadcast this we get a result as any council in the country could change their policy and decide to hit us with a charge. Take Care Alison

Hi

I have signed the petition even though I live in Northern Ireland.

Disabled people here receive no free transport. If you are 16 or over you can apply for a pass to pay half the single fare, which means the bus company is still making money as return fares are a lot cheaper. Carers have no concessions.

All the best with your petition

I have also signed the petition in my support and as previously mentioned if we don't support one another it won't take them long to charge right across the country.

Here in North Tyneside we have free bus passes for those with a disability but have a charge of £12 per year for the Gold Card which allows travel on the metro. In my opinion I don't mind that small charge. However, as a carer we get no reduced travel yet in my case my son is unable to travel alone
