young carers

my 15 yr old daughter has been my carer for three years now. As my condition worsens so her workload increases and all without complaint. I did try to bring in outside carers but she has difficulty in letting 'strangers' care for me. She had used to attend young carers meetings but rather lost interest because the make-up of the groups kept changing and she found it difficult to be constantly making new friends.

She attends a dance/drama group once a week which is her only outlet but desperately needs dance shoes, leotards ect
as she is also starting a performing arts course in September. Do any of you carers out there know where i can get her some financial help with these costs. She turns 16 in July but won't be eligible for carers allowance as her college course is classed as full time. She is a fantastic kid and could really use a reward for all the hard work she puts in.

Hello Dyan

Have you contacted your local carers centre to see if they have any funding available for young carers. If they don't let me know which area your in and I shall see if I can find a funder who fits your criteria

take care

Hiya Tricia, I did speak with someone from the local carers centre a short while ago but they referred me on to the C.A.B who in turn referred me on to D.S.S who won't fund for this type of thing. It seems to be a bit of a grey area all round. My daughter used to attend the Salford young carers group but it seems the funding is based on outing etc for the young carers. They are still involved with us though so maybe they will come up with something. Thanks for your help. Be glad of any ideas. best wishes Dyan

Hi Dyan

We (The PRTC) also run a Young Carers site which might be really useful for your daughter. There are two online youth care workers there who moderate the chats and discussion boards - if she hasn't already registered, she could take a look at www.youngcarers.net .

I hope you'll find it useful.
