Caring for paid carers

This is how little we count. On applying for a short Adult Placement on a regular basis, I was told that they had to ensure the care of the person appointed to care, that they were looked after and paid the correct amount as it was a difficult job. HELLO do any of us get told we need looking after and paid a decent rate NO. Plus just to meet them we have to pay a rate of just under £10.00 an hour. Its no wonder nobody socialises with us ! maybe they think it will cost them to talk to us. Have you ever heard anything so disgusting. Also we have overlapping benefits which keep us in poverty, whilst they dont have to pay tax on their wage off us. It just gets better and better. Welcome to the nanny state.

You have to remember that Adult Placement carers are doing a job of work and fall under the same restrictions etc as say a carer in a residential or nursing home. They are in fact self employed and do pay national insurance and tax the same as anyone else. What you were actually being told was that anyone in an adult placements care falls into one of three payment bands depending on what is required of the carer. Also since Adult placement carers actually care for people in there own home the adult placement officer tries to suite both service user, carer and family of carer. I know its very frustrating but they really are trying to do the best .

Re: Caring for paid carers
Thu 13 Dec 2007 09:23Well thank you for your reply, but what on earth this has to do with paying to meet them is beyond me. I was making a point that we as unpaid carers do a job, with little or no support and nobody cares if we are looked after. I dont think frustration is quite the right word , do you ? No they dont pay tax on earnings from A P as I was told. They dont have to. I also think that two people working full time should not be allowed to care as a paid job, because it is tiring and they cannot give of their time in the same way. It seems anyone fits the criteria for payment except the people that really do the caring -US. As for doing their best, after it has taken the authorities over a year to actually bother to get around to sending somebody to discuss this then no its not their best. What if we actually took a year to decide we would care properly. The people we care for would be dead.
What a pity we arent deemed fit to be put into one of three payment bands. Poor, Very poor and living in Poverty as most of us do ?

Re: Caring for paid carers
Wed 19 Dec 2007 10:29Hi Mo
I do know how you feel. I care for both my daughter and my elderly father and Christmas time is especially difficult and depressing. I agree ap carers should be at home if they are doing care but unfortunately that is not how the SS see it. They say the service user has to fit in with the family and families work. I know its not fair because in our caring roles the chances of working are very limited even if we have the energy which I for sure do not. Having said that AP carers do a good job on the whole and I know my daughter used to enjoy her respite care with them. I was given a whole 12 days a year respite!!! I do`nt use the system any more for her for personal reasons. As they say life is a bitch and for us carers we get the off cuts of the bitch. Still there are good people out there who do try to help and I am grateful to them. Have the best Christmas possible. Take Care...ValerieN
