Do Carers feel that there should be more " breaks for carers" ?..... Holidays that are supported for carers to go on in the uk and unwind and relax away from there daily rountine ,like 1 week breaks? Just that I am doing some reseach for a project and wondered if there is a need for this?

Yes ..... provided :

1. Caree receives care compatable with that given by his \ her carer.

2. Said break is priced WITHIN a carer's capacity to pay ( bear in mind that only 1 in 15 carers receive Carers Pittance of £ 48.65 .... a day ? No .... a week).

3. Caree is NOT means tested !!!!!!!!!

There needs to be places which specialise in caree / carer breaks. It is so hard to organise trips away especially when you have take into consideration someone elses needs

Wanda, try being a carer 24/7 for a month and then see if you think you need a break of the sort you describe. Roll eyes emoticon

Explanation: Apppropriate respite (ie not putting a 30 year old in a nursing home full of v elderly people) often isn't available or affordable. Cursing emoticon

I don't want my caree being put in a home or a hospital, even for one night, when he doesn't need to be there.

This is the type of break I could do with: Somebody doing all the housework, the heavy work, all the shopping (bear in mind I don't drive) the hassle with bureaucracy & doctors for the entire length of the break. Transport to & from the break would be included free of charge

We'd ideally stay somewhere which my caree would like (even if he wasn't long term sick & disabled) and find accessible for his condition - not easy as even a short journey wipes him out for a day or so.

Come to think of it, I'd be happy to stay home with my caree if we could just get enough money to pay the staff for 2 weeks to do everything I usually have to do! Laugh emoticon

BTW As part of the break, the application procedure for getting a break like that should not induce so much stress that it's enough to make you need a holiday! Blink emoticon

I do get respite for my son but he is reluctant to go. I need that break. What I would prefer now and again woutd be for carers to come into the home and for my break away be paid for as there is no other way I could pay for a break away myself. Like many other carers fiances are a big issue.

When I was caring for my mother which was 24/7 my son had respite then as well but I never got any respite from my caring role with my mother. At the time of caring for my mother I was sleeping in the same room as her and was lucky to get an hours sleep at a time through out the night without being woken up to see to her. That is enough to cause exhaustion but since then I have been diganosed with Sleep Apnoea which without the appropriate treatment is a life threatening condition. Sleep Apnoea if untreated can cause server depression, heart complications and the high risk of a stroke. Some of these which I have now due to not receiving treatment before the condition was diagnosed. And here was me thinking I was just worn out due to my caring role,

But getting back to breaks, So ideally in my circumstances and here I am not voicing other carers views but my own and that is for carers to be able to come into the home and look after my son while I got a break away which was paid for. Not a lot ot ask but I do know we have come along way in the last 20 to 40 years. Had my son been born back then there is more chance he would of been carted off into an institue and forgotten about at least I know I have have the pleasuers which my son brings into my life.

I hope this helps with your research and good luck with your project.

That Tricia and I live in the same area I doubt,. When I found out that help was there I soon got a stack of vouchers to have respite care either in home or away, before fing out about the help I had arranged this with a very good friend who lives across the back street to us, she, and her family took my wife into their home while I was galavanting off. She loved it, from a monsabilic man about the home to a house full of a happy family. They are ashian and dispaly more christian spirit that some who profess that faith. The short break I had did wonders for me, I realy didn't realise how much I neeeded one. Well done Shabida Fazzel a small enough recognition of your help . Glynne
