Hi im new here so if im doing this wrong i apologise!!
My daughter is 14 months old and received middle rate dla. I didn't know until this week that i can claim carers allowance. I don't work - my husband does. Would i be able to backdate my claim to when she first received dla or have i missed the boat. ( i don't mean to sound like a money grabber, but i didn't even know i was entitled to claim!)
Thanks in advance.

Re: carers allowance query
Thu 6 Nov 2008 14:53hi lukluc , as far as im aware you can claim carers from the date your daughter was diagnosed with whatever it is she has. That's tha way i understand it ...give dwp a call.

Re: carers allowance query
Thu 6 Nov 2008 15:33Hi lukluc,
Bev is right because that also happened to me when my daughter was diagnosed with her problems. Mine was also backdated.
Check what else you are entitled to when you are also on the phone because if you dont ask you do not get especially when you are a carer. They do not make these benefits widely known or advertise them so make sure you are claiming for whatever you should be.

Re: carers allowance query
Thu 6 Nov 2008 20:32Hi thanks for replying. I rang them we are entitled to have it backdated for 3 months only. She was born with her condition, but i've not known what i can/can't claim for. Also i wish someone could help deal with this for you I was so stressed coming to terms with her condition and all the hospital and therapy appointments etc all this claiming has proved to be highly stressful i was only told about dla. Thanks for all you help though!

Re: carers allowance query
Thu 6 Nov 2008 22:17And if you get child tax credits inform them of your DLA award and you will get the disability premium backdated to the same date. Best wishes.

Re: carers allowance query
Thu 6 Nov 2008 23:22If you are unsure what you can or can't claim, get in touchw ith your local Welfare Rights people or even Citizens Advice Beaureu and explain everything and they should be able to help. I was told about DLA, Carers Allowance and the Tax Credits claims via my sons Special Needs Health Visitor, she also came and filled all the forms in for me with my input and all my money was backdated and took around 2months to come through this time last year.

Re: carers allowance query
Fri 7 Nov 2008 11:30Hi lukluc,
As you've found out it depends when your daughter was awarded DLA - the Carers Allowance Unit said the general rule for backdating is:
If the claim to Carer’s Allowance is received at the Carer’s Allowance Unit within 3 months of the Disability Living Allowance/Attendance Allowance decision being made they can look at backdating the Carer’s Allowance to the date of entitlement to Disability Living Allowance/Attendance Allowance.
If the claim to Carer’s Allowance is received after 3 months of the Disability Living Allowance/Attendance Allowance decision being made, they will only be able to consider backdating Carer’s Allowance up to a maximum of 3 months before the date we receive the claim form.
Best wishes, Michele
