I always ask my social worker if they have a student social worker on placement and if so would I am more than willing for them to take my son's case load.

The reason is that student social workers are very keen to get things done as they are learning well normally they have as I have found in my case.

Anyone who has an issue which they feel they can't resolve I would fully recommend is requesting a student social worker to take up the case. Not only are they keen but they are closely monitored and they have to show evidence that they are doing their job...... from what I have heard from others on here shame it does not extend to those who are qualified.

Of course, my son's normal social worker who we have had for a good few years is one of the exceptions who does listen to me and does take action asap

student soical workers are a dream come true!
we had an awful SW at first so after i physically extracted her from my house (!!!!) they sent me a newly qualified one who was fab- she was soooo keen and fresh- got loads of stuff in place for us and the boys.

hi , im new to this , hello everyone, about the student social worker unfortunatly i have had a bad experience- im still waiting for her to sort respite for me since april as i have no family help just me my husband and im caring for my 18 month son and my health is not good due to stress and depression - its been so hard and feeling so alone - i just keep geting fobbed off when i call her , but not everyone is the same

welcome Zak I would contact your head of social services and report your disappointment in the student social worker. Student social workers don't usually have much time in their placements to be lax about getting services put into place that is one of the reasons why they are usually so good. It sounds like the student social worker who has been allocated to you is going to fail their degree if they don't get their act together quickly

As for respite I had to wait five years before my son was old enough to go to the unit as there were no families suitable for him before then. I had orginally requested a family but simply there just was ain't any available so had to compromise and go for the unit where he has been going regularly now for nine years.

Do you know what, my dream was being a social worker but there are so many obstacles such as learning that stand in the way. So what happens, we get shafted because social workers are too over loaded to give the same care that they wanted to give a trainee social workers...gov't have a lot to answer too sadly
