Advice Needed adult learning disability relates URGENT!!!

Hi need urgent advice on how to cope at Dentist next wednesday the day i have been dreading has arrived a filling is required for my caree/friend (adult male learning disability)
They usually play up when its just a check out swearing at dentist and calling them names not polite ones.
I find it really embarassing and uncomfortable as i am not sure how i should react or how the dentist will react.
I find myself shouting at them all the way home like a mother to a naughty child not sure this helps.
Any advice on how i should handle the situation would be greatly appreciated as i am this close to cancelling the appointment alltogether even though it is urgent. Blushing emoticon

Difficult one, I would speak to the dentist and see what he/she says, they may be happy to deal with the situation and close their ears to the not very polite names, or they may refer your friend to the community dentist at the hospital who are used to this type of reaction. I worked as a nurse years ago in a ward where we had some dental beds and we had some patiens who had to have a general anaesthetic to do any kind of work. A chat with the GP Dentist and try and sort out what is best should help. Dont feel embarrised and shouting wont help just ignore it and let the professionals do their job, maybe you even stepping out during the proceedure would help calm the situation as well. Dont know if this is any help but good luck with next weeks appointment.

Have you tried asking to be refered to the community dentist.
My young man would only ever allow them to treat him.

They gave him "happy gas" and never had any problems as the dentist was so nice and understood my son's difficulties.

Good luck.

turquoise, thank you so much for your good sound advice it has made me feel much better about things as i had no ideal how to handle future appointments. I had never been told of a community dentist i have looked it up today on the net and it is now called Special Care Dental Service. I have the address and will visit them tommorow in person as only local to see if this will benefit, then i am off to the dentist, depending on outcome i may try to get them refered there. I did discuss it with them being very carefull what i said and they are happy to change dentist as they think the present one is a ** **.

Wondered if anyone knows if this behaviour problem with appointments at least 2 a week and other incidents in the community would qualify for middle rate mobility ? as only get lower rate. Cursing emoticon

There is only low rate mobility and high rate mobility.

The higher rate is difficult to get if the person can walk without problems with their walking.

I would be aware that if you ask for the award to be looked at with a view to upping the mobility rate they will look at the whole thing so you are at risk of losing as well as gaining.

It's a difficult one and I would take advice before going ahead.

Too late for wednesday...but maybe for the future?
Dentist visits are tricky, a pre visit by you as the carer to chat about the persons needs so that you are not talking about them whilst they are sitting in the chair as this can build up stress! The good thing about pre visits is that the dentist knows the plan of action! and knows when the person has had enough which helps to salvage future visits. One way I have worked with my daughter is to photograph the dentist, and the surgery/waiting room to chat about before visits. Make regular appointments to see the dentist, just to build a relationship, even if its for a few minutes to look around the persons mouth. I have also photographed her whilst she has had treatment ie sitting in the chair, letting the dentist look in her mouth. She likes to look at this when everything is over to see how good she has been! Another distraction may be to have someone on the phone to chat if he/she needs a break for a minute. There may also be a community dentist/hygienist who may be able to do home visits, again to build up confidence. Don't worry about the language its purely stress. Higher rate motability can be given if the persons behaviour can be a danger to themselves or others, I received it for my daughter.

Maybe it might help if you gave the dentist surgery a note stating the problem and any small steps that may make it easier for all involved, that way all of the staff from the receptionis to the dentist will be aware of the situation and may be able to make sure he is seen quickly , little things like whether the dentist needs to talk him through every step or just get on with it etc.
