I have just heard my sons appeal for DLA has been accepted and he's been awarded the higher care rate
I was not expecting this but very pleased. As a single mum i am on income support already my question is do i have to claim carers allowance or do i just get a premium on top of current income support, I have looked on entitledto site but both options seem possible?

Re: what to claim?
Sat 30 Aug 2008 21:58Hi, I'm on income support and i get carers allowance too although it is then taken off my income support and replaced with an underlying entitlement of carers allowance
very confusing, i know. All it means is that i get full carers allowance on monday and less income support on tuesday. I don't think you can get the underlying entitlement on your income support if you haven't already claimed cares allowance - i think they go hand in hand and one dept informs the other. They don't make it easy for us do they!!
GOOD LUCK!!!

Re: what to claim?
Sun 31 Aug 2008 09:49I have carers allowance, but the amount was deducted from my husband`s pension credit. Financially we are no better off, however I receive National Insurance credits under the "home responsibilities protection scheme" whilst I continue to care so that I will eventually be entitled to a retirement pension in my own right. Whilst that wouldn`t make us any better off financially as I loose my Carers Allowance on retirement, if my husband (15 years my senior) dies before me and I go back to work I have not got the 10+ caring years to pay to NI to secure my pension.
Take care
Meg

Re: what to claim?
Sun 31 Aug 2008 10:13I do't know your situation but I am a single parent. I claim both I. Support & carers allowance. The whole of the carers allowance is taken off I Support but they allow you a premium (because you are caring for someone, in my case roughly half carers allowance) It is well worth claiming carers as it shows your status - not available for for work etc & should not (though very many still do) receive demands to drop in at jobcentres/rehab & the like for the long time enemployed - with the old threat 'your benefit will be stopped'

Re: what to claim?
Sun 31 Aug 2008 13:37Hello
Also if you get child tax credits for your son you will need to inform them as you will be entitled to the disabled premium on the child tax credits which will increase child tax credits quiet a bit.
This one they don't give in one hand and take off in the other which makes a very nice change

Re: what to claim?
Thu 4 Sep 2008 13:12Because your child has been awarded The High Rate Care component of DLA you will be entilted to an additional £3560 per year Child Tax Credits (this includes the child disability element and the child severe disability element). If you claim carers allowance you will be entitled to a Carer's Premium of £27.75 per week above your current Income Support Level - so even though they reduce your income support by £50.55 by paying this amount as Carer's Allowance, your own overall income will increase by £27.75 per week as well as receiving the additional child tax credit (in other words, you should be better off by approx £95.00 per week by claiming the additional Child Tax Credits and Carers Allowance). Hope this makes sense?
