Oliver Twist

I have lost count how many Oliver Twist DVD's my son has.
But yesterday he got me to google workhouse and we read up the history to them. I know we feel that life is hard on us but it did make me sit up and realise how lucky I am to be of this generation and not of been born in my parents or grand parents generation. I know we would of ended up in one of those awful workhouses if we were in the circumstances which we are in today.
Then I had to read the news and see what the latest suggestion is to get people off long term benefits back into work.
Don't you think we already earn our benefits for those carers who get them?
However, saying all of that I do believe there are many out there who could contribute towards society. It would also mean that tax payers won't feel that they are paying money to those who are able to contribute rather than just giving money to them.
I just hope that we don't have to wait to long for carers in our situation to be appreciated by society.
We have been doing it for years what they are suggesting others should do to be entitled to benefits.
There are the exceptions where we need to look after our vulnerable and make sure that they are not abused by this new system. Should it work!
Will be interesting to hear of others views on this subject

Tue 22 Jul 2008 10:51Well im 1 of 10 siblings, my dad died when i was 10 and to say we were poor is an understatement, my brothers used to go out at night and nick peoples veg from the allotments and me and my sister used to go out scrumping during the day, we didnt have 2 tanners to rud together, once my mum took us for a long walk and i found a ten bob note! we were able to have spaghetti on toast for dinner and it was the best meal iv'e ever had, my mum did her best but if it wasn't for the free school dinners we would only have 1 meal a day most times, times were very very hard, as my brothers got older and were able to go to work and bring money in things started getting better but it wasn't till the late 70's and i was the last sibling to go out to work meaning we were all working now did things really change, i will never allow Adam to go to bed if he says he is hungry even if i suspect he is just stalling, no wonder we all have health problems and crowns instead of our own teeth!!!
