i wonder if anyone can tell me if there is a scheme out there that helps with gardening for the disabled. we have just moved into a disabled adapted council house after begging for over 12 months (think they gace it me to shut me up !) and well the problem is the house is great but the garden is a dump. after the expense of moving we dont have the funds to get someone in to do it and i was wondering if anyone knew who i could go to for help. i dont need it to be perfectly manicured, its just that i am not able to do the heavt work such as laying turf and slabs.
any suggestions would be most appreciated

Re: gardening help
Mon 9 Jun 2008 21:51you could ask social services if they can recommend a local charity - round here there's a great one called DYNAH (do you need a hand) who do gardening, decorating, etc and although they do charge, the fees are very small, and the people are very hard working.

Mon 9 Jun 2008 22:33Hi Kate.
You could go to the citizens advice and ask if they know of any age concerns local they come and do my Aunty's garden as she is disabled now and can not cope with gardening

Tue 10 Jun 2008 12:00Hi Kate,
Just contat your local volunteer bureau and they should be able to help or at least point you in the right direction. We have many schemes here for the elderly to help with gardening, decorating etc, so hopefully there may be similar in your area for people with or who are caring for, someone with a disabliity.
Good luck

Tue 10 Jun 2008 17:21Have you asked the Council? Ours run a scheme (very reasonable too) for help with gardening whether you live in Council or privately owned property. I know they have cleared gardens for free. Worth a try!

Fri 13 Jun 2008 11:28hi thanks to everyone who replied.
yes lynn i tried the council, they just laughed at me and virtually said i was lucky to have a disabled house!
im trying to get in touch with a volunteer bureau and am waiting for them to get back to me.
so on i go to keep trying. Im pretty good at gardening when the garden is one as such, but slab laying and turfing is beyond me!
thanks again for all those replies.

Fri 13 Jun 2008 20:02Hi Katew as the others said there usually is local help mainly through volunteer centres who co-ordinate all the vol work in the area, there is always a group who help in the garden, and a differant one who decorate etc
and how disrespectful the council where to you shame on them,if fact shame on most councils who do they they are eh

Re: gardening help
Sun 15 Jun 2008 15:29About ten years ago I got help slabbing my (then) garden from the team doing community hours through the court. It was arranged through the council, but as the council do not seem to be aware the court office nearest to where you live should be able to give you information.
The team were always supervised and did a brilliant job
