1) Managing to get things done despite lack of real support from social services
2) Managing to survive (albeit barely) on carer's allowance and a reduced level income support
3) Being given the chance to care for my mother in her later years
4) Enjoying the pieces of my mum's personality that are still with me
5) Enjoying my mum's smile and witnessing her overwhelming joy when i tell her she now lives with me (she has Alzheimer's so it is often)
6) Holding people up in supermarkets when my mother stops me and wants me to talk to every baby that she sees
7) Watching salespeople who, when they catch my mother's eye, try to sell her their products e.g. the guy trying to sell us Sky TV in the local precinct. He gets excited because she shows an interest but she hasn't a clue what he's talking about and he doesnt notice until he's half-way through his speil - there are other examples.
8) Knowing i will never let the b****s grind me down
9) The joy at finding what ever my mum has hidden
10) Thinking about the things that make me smile
What doesn't make me smile.............
1) Women leaving the toilet seat down - how very annoyingggggggggrrrrrrrr....................................

Fri 30 May 2008 18:15now listen here all you fella's TOILET SEATS ARE MADE TO BE DOWN OK!!!
theres nothing worse than bustin for a wee dashing to the loo just about managing to get one's trousers etc down plonk one's self on the loo asap only to get the shock of the freezing cold of the ceramic toilet against one's skin
An idea ladies! try writing "flippin eck thats tiny" just under the rim of the loo seat in permanent marker
the men will soon put the seat down in its rightful position

Sat 31 May 2008 18:52My sister Helen has downs syndrome and dementia, she's 44. Last year i took her on holiday with us to Butlins Minehead, everyone thought it would be her last holiday. She's still going strong but deteriorating at an alarming pace, she has been on Arisept(spelling?) for a couple of years now and often has her dose increased. As she has down's its hard for anyone to communicate with her and find out how the dose increases affect her, we know of some of the side affects but wish we could know more. Have either of you have any knowledge of Arisept and how it affect the user? We know we wont have her forever and at 44 she's already lived beyond expectations, but it would be nice to have as many facts and opinions we can as to give her the very best quality of life while we can, all coments welcome.
