Hey! As my profile says- i am living with and caring for my Grandma who has vascular dementia. I'm 26 and balancing caring with a full time PhD in London and failed attempt at a social life! I'd really like to talk with anyone who can relate, perhaps for some mutual support?! Thanks so much. Best wishes to everyone,
Emma

Wed 30 Apr 2008 20:34Hi Emma,I'm new to the sight too and i am caring for my
83 yr old mother who has dementia. At least i was till the nhs stole her-thats the way it feels. She was in hosp and just as iwas finally getting her home the sw informed me they were sending her to a nursing home for 4 weeks to 'build her up'!9 weeks later she is still there due to inefficency of continuing care manager.
My carer,s allowance has been cancelled so i will have to reapply!
It can be really lonely even with my family around me.
best wishes

Re: Dementia
Mon 5 May 2008 17:44Hi Emma, my Dad too has been diagnosed with vascular dementia. In his case his speech has been badly affected (Aphasia) and I have to do most things round the house i.e. cooking, cleaning, washing shopping etc as well as help him with all the personal stuff.
Just reached the big 5-0 birthday wise. Not doing the PhD thing , but I am studying an Art History course long-distance with the National Extension College - which helps keep my brain active lol!
I know what you mean about the social side - I get a break once a week via the brilliant Crosroads who sit with Dad while I have some time out, and when my brother's shift's permit, he Dad-sits a couple of times a month so I get a whole pm rather than a couple of hours.
Madmel, If you were getting CA it should have continued for four weeks while you Gran was in Hospital. After that it stops and you should have been on Income Support for a further 8 weeks - I suggest you contact your local CAB if you have been getting CA and not IS, not sure what happens after that as dad was out after seven weeks, but again CAB should be able to help.
I don't get online here as much as I would like but will keep an eye out for your postings...
Best Wishes
Liz
