Mobility/bladder problems

My mother has severe arthritis combined with what the doctor calls an irritable bladder. This means she has to keep getting up at night to use the commode, but she is so stiff that she is really struggling to get out of bed, and also she hardly gets any sleep. The doctor has tried two different drugs to "stabilise" the bladder but neither has helped much so far. Does anyone else have any experience of this sort of problem or any idea what else we might try? (The drugs she has had so far are oxybutinin and solefenacin - I think!)

Re: Mobility/bladder problems
Wed 2 Apr 2008 23:51Hi Serena
I dont personally have any experience of this but my mum has a lot of bladder problems - needing to go to the toilet constantly. She saw a urologist who said that part of the irritation was down to urine acidity. He suggested that she drank cranberry juice as this helps neutralise some of the acidity.
I also worked on a spinal injury unit as a secretary for a Consultant Urologist and he would also tell patients to try the cranberry juice if they had a problem with needing to urinate very frequently.
Has your mother been seen by a Urologist? If not, it might be worth asking for a referral.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, that's a really useful suggestion. I will ask the GP if she can be referred to a urologist.
All the best,
Serena

Hope you can get the referral - just gives access to more specialised help with this problem which Im sure is distressing for your mother, and for you seeing her discomfort, and different treatment options.
Take care
All the best to you and your mother

Re: Mobility/bladder problems
Thu 17 Apr 2008 15:13Could you maybe try a male urinal(they can have female adaptor) that she can use in bed. save her getting in/out.
My son goes 1-2 times during the night but being male the urinal bottle is handy though a bit stinky by morning! He will have the occassional spill but much better than getting in/out of bed twice a night.
You can get one for about £15
