Hi I'm new to this forum, but have been a carer for the past 5 years... My question is how many weeks of short stay respite can I put my grandad in for each year? I've tried looking and contacting SS but they never seem to want to get back to me.

Thanking you in advance

Hello Bethany

You can only find out how many nights of respite your entitled to through the person who cares for your grandad having a carers assessment which unfortunately is done through social services. If you contact them or get your local carers centre to contact social services and state you are in need of a carers assessment.

From the information from the carers assessment will determine how many nights the carer is in need of respite.

And as this will be within adult social service care it will also depend upon your grandad's income and savings as he may have to pay for some if not all of his respite care. This puts a lot of older people off from seeking respite and put pressure onto the family carer which to me is very unfair as the respite is for the carer to have a break and most carers are struggling financially to start with too

We have just been awarded Direct Payments and one of the things you can use it for is respite care - maybe it would be worth you speaking to a social worker and finding out if you can apply - it's worth a try!!
