hello! first time I've used this! was wondering if anyone out there with a child with Downs has anything that they want to share with me, in terms of 'things I wish I'd known or someone had told me..'when they were small. We're loving having Emily around and she's already part of our family - lots of smiles at the moment!

Re: 10 week old daughter with Downs
Tue 26 Feb 2008 11:13Congradulations.
I have a beautiful 10 year old daughter who has down syndrome.
She has long brown hair blue eyes little nose and an infectious laugh.
She makes the world beautiful and I love her more than words can say. I am so proud of her.
On sunday she marched with her fellow brownies on the thinking day procession and went to church afterwards.
She plays football every week, goes disco dancing and has lots of medels and cups from the competitions shes entered.
She goes swimming every week and is triyng to dive (it gives me a heart attack). In the summer she goes horseriding.
In other words she has a better social life than me!I wish I had known how much she can do. Maybe it would have stopped me panicing and wasting time worrying about what ifs or what she cant do.
She makes me appreciate life.

Tue 26 Feb 2008 11:22Hello Poppy
I can't share anything with you as my Downs Daughter is 40 years old so my tips would be old fashioned to you. But one thing I will say Emily will make your life rich beyond belief, their
will be tears and frusteration as well as laughter, but when she puts her arms around you and says I love you Mummy everything will be worthwhile, believe me it is true.Give Emily a special hug from me.
Alice.

Re: 10 week old daughter with Downs
Tue 26 Feb 2008 12:00Thank you so much to both of you - afraid your posts have made me cry but in a very positive way! I'm going to print out the poem as well and keep it. It does seem that each day I see more of Emily as a beautiful, interested and smiling baby as opposed to just thinking ahead to the potential problems..and actually it's only because of the extra medical appointments we're attending that I keep be reminded of it! Thank you so much - I will go back and give Emily a big hug now! xxx

Re: 10 week old daughter with Downs
Tue 26 Feb 2008 13:53I dont know where you are poppy but if you are in my area Bradford there is a really lovely support group thats meets once a month. They have books, tapes, resourses you can borrow for free as well as running early intervention groups for little ones.
Theres makaton signing courses etc. You dont have to be a meeting person to benefit or ask for advice later on.
Let me know if you need any info.
Has anyone told you about portage Kaitlin started having it at about 8 months - Im mentioning it cos is got a big waiting list in my area. So you put your name down and take it up later(you can change your mind).

Re: 10 week old daughter with Downs
Tue 26 Feb 2008 16:06Hello Poppy
I don't know if you are aware of the down's syndrome association web site
I have a few friends who have children with down syndrome and they are involved with the down's assocation and have found that they are a great source of support also that they have wonderful events of fun days for the children.
I know it is early days for your daughter but if you get involved now and become aware of what is available it will put you in good stead for your daughter's future
Also congralutations on the birth of your wonderful baby girl and hope she brings you many years of joy and love into your life
Take care

Hi Poppy ,my advice to you is, see her as an individual, remember all People with Down's Syndrome are different, and come on 'most rungs of the ladder'. There are obviously some similarities, but overall she is a child , who will blossom with someone who cares and that way reach her full potential !!.
Can remember when I had my daughter over 40 years ago!!
Seems like yesterday!!
