I care for my son

Hello. I'm new to this , so i apologise now if i ramble.
My son son was diagnosed with a mental illness 2 years ago.
I was trying to hold down my job & care for my son. The job I had was with a very well known store. They were not very sympathetic to say the least. So with that added pressure, I had to give up my job last year.
I am claiming incapacity benefit & income support.
I now don't know which way to turn. So I am now going to have to look for a new job. To make ends meet.
I feel my son is slipping back a bit at the moment. i'm worried about him.

hi hippyp

i would ask for a visit from the welfare rights unit.

you and your son should be entitled to more than ICB and IS.
your SON should be entitled to disability living allowance and a disability premium on his IS(if he is an adult) or on your child tax credit if a child)
if awarded DLA for your son. you can apply for carers allowance you will not get that but an underlying entitlement on your IS. you still have to fill in the forms for CA to get this. it sounds stupid but that is how the benefits agency works.

Welfare rights should tell you this and more.
i found them helpful

Hi tired lady.

Thankyou for your advice.Sorry if i confused you. My son being 23 gets DLA & IS.
It's me who is struggling with money. My mum bought me some basics yesterday as i had no money. Don't know what I'd do without her!!
I am so low at the moment.

Thanks again.
It was lovely to hear from someone so quickly!
