this has not affected me directly but of a situation which I know happens. if a carer is in need of a break but the person they are caring for is able to pay for their care and refuse to pay while their carer has a break. (I am on the understanding that direct payments is means tested) This can lead to emotional blackmail for the carer as the carer feels that they are unable to take a break due to person they are caring for won't have someone to care for them while the carer takes a break.

Hi tricia, you are right about the means testing as they asked about our bank account etc. before they paid for anything.

If we'd had any money, we would have had to pay a portion towards care, I'm not sure how much it would have been though!

D.P. worries me considerably.

As we have seen with privatisation, local government and many other instances, the initial upfront carrot looks good, wait until it's swallowed and then cut it back - and back........
and then blame the authority that took over the venture for mismanagement and wash your hands of it.

I have a feeling that's whats going to happen in East Sussex when the voluntary sector volunteer (some coerced) to take over the social care aspects.

Trouble now is that if the Gov.t did come up with a Kosher idea - who in their right mind would believe them?

I started to recieve direct payments last april for my children. I have had no problems so far. My children have to have regular checks to see if the goverment feel respite is still needed.
I am knowledgable in finance and accounts so i could have arranged payroll myself. but I was told about the Disability Charitable Focus trust who will do everything for the whole year. at the cost of £70 out of the respite funding.
so I chose them. the very little time I have caring for my 3 sons. it suited me well.
