Difficulty swollowing

Hi. I wonder if anyone can give me some advice. My elderly father had cancer of the throat 23 years ago and as a result he now has a tracheotomy in his throat ( open hole to breath through). This last year he has been having very moist blended dinners with nourishment drinks to supplement. But recently he cannot even swollow his soft meals but still insists on sitting down to a meal and pours so much salt on it that its almost a white. If I take the salt away he gets annoyed. He totally denies he cannot swollow his food and if you sit with him whilst he is eating he will stuff the food into his cheeks until he thinks you are not looking and then spits it out into tissue. All the doctors offer is nourishment drinks. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

When my dad was alive he was unable to eat towards the end of his life and he ended up on nurishment meals from our GP.

I remember he was given milk shakes which were not very nice to drink but he did like the nurishment soups which he got through our GP. I also made him home made soups rather than shop bought tin soups then I knew what was going into them. I use to put a range of vegetables in them gratted (thank goodness for the food processor) Then blend them if they were too lumpy after adding the soup mix. I also used Knorrs stock cubes as they are glutton free.

It might be worth a go

Sorry I can't think of anything else at the moment

Hello, When I found my husband couldn't swallow apart from giving him home-made soups, he loved custard. In fact he would eat the pudding, ie. custard first and then have the soup. He also like having plain yogart and honey.
