CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS

Hi I have been a carer for the local authority for nearly 30 years a few yrs ago they opted out to an agency. Since then myself and carers I know have had a bad time with the agency. My family have always cared for the person I look after when I have a break they are cb checked but now we are being told that they have to do all sorts of training. A care worker who goes to work in a residential home does not have to have all sorts of training. Really think that carers will not want to do their jobs anymore with all this new legislation and we will go back to the old days of people being placed in residential homes instead of families who are willing to care.

Re: CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Sat 17 Nov 2007 19:00Hi Not Happy, I think you misunderstand the purpose of this site. It is to provide support for carers ( unpaid carers) who have enough battles of their own to get even the meagre support and income that they do get without getting roped into battles of people who earn their living as PAID CARE WORKERS .
Sorry if this sounds harsh or abrupt because it isn't meant to. By all means make your views known but you are targetting the wrong audience, therefore wasting your time.
Sheila.

Re: CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Wed 21 Nov 2007 21:49Having seen what can happen to our elderly when carers are changed I do sympathise. I am my fathers main carer. He lives alone the other side of town and until recently has managed with professional carers going in to him 3 times a day. Then the council changed the agency and I have had to pick up the pieces visiting him every day. Since I already care for my daughter who has learning disabilities and child mind my one year old grand daughter 4 days a week I find it really hard work. I have a great regard for good professional carers who take some of the strain off of people like me.

Re: CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Thu 22 Nov 2007 11:16I have no regard for professional carers, they get paid well for the job and that is why they do it. If they had no pay like us, they wouldnt be seen for dut. May I also add that all the NVQs in the world and degrees do not equip a persons suitability to care.WE dont get paid and I must agree we cannot get into arguments for PAID carers on here, they have plenty of support whilst we have very little or some of us none, despite all this "extra" money Mr Brown seems to be pledging. Where is it going thats what I would like to know???????

Re: CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Thu 22 Nov 2007 12:52Thank you Not Happy for bring this to our attention.
I do understand where your coming from as when I originally requested my son to have respite we had to wait over five years before he was offered a place. My first request was to be placed with a family but due to the lack of family placements I had to place him in a respite unit. The staff there do try their best but my son is not too happy about going; if he had his own way he would not leave my side; but because I do need that break once a month I have little choice.
I recently got a family referal but was not suitable for his needs.
I also know of foster carers who take on children with additional needs, yes they get paid a lot more than us which annoys me especially as all unpaid carers are struggling just to survive. But I also see the committment which they make in providing a home for many of these vunerable children would be put into children's homes. We only have to look at the media to see how many cases of abuse have come to light recently from vulnerable children put into care back in the 1970's

Re: CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Fri 23 Nov 2007 11:27Hi not happy
Many carers on this site are unpaid carers who care not for money but mostly out of love tell me how many paid carers would care for nought or for 49 pounds a week ? I bet not many and some even experience insults from paid carers These ( unpaid) carers deserve a lot of praise and this site was set up for them so they can get help .
There are organisations that help paid workers not this site we unpaid carers have a lot to contend with without getting involved with paidcarers arguments .
I am sorry if I sound rude but carers who care because they wont to / love to me they deserve all the praise and help available and I am privilege to know some. coffee

Fri 23 Nov 2007 17:56NOT HAPPY?? NOT A CARER either- you are a care worker and by your attitude to the need for training maybe you should consider a change of job.
There are enough untrained care workers out there making the carer's job harder without more.

Re: CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Fri 23 Nov 2007 19:21Hello Not Happy
I noticed a job advertisement in our local newspaper - Local Authority advertising for care workers:
Rate of pay - £8.06 to £8.45 per hour
Overtime rate paid for extra/unsocial hours, etc
Generous holiday package
Pension Scheme
Uniform, including winter outdoor jacket, providedNone of the above is applicable to the UNPAID CARERS for whom this site was set up.
If you have a grievance regarding your employment you need to discuss with your employer. I also feel sure that there must be a website relevant to your needs as a paid care worker.

Re: CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Fri 23 Nov 2007 20:46Hi I have been watching these posts with interest. I cant understand why you are so hard on not happy. Yes we are all carers but things have happened in our lives which made us carers its not something we would have chosen. I have the greatest respect for paid carers they do a fantastic job. My husband has parkinsons disease and without a paid carer coming in to help me I just don't know what I would do. Maybe one day in the future you will need the services of a paid carer to help you one day. So what I am saying really is don't knock the paid carers.

Re: CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Fri 23 Nov 2007 20:57Probably because over the past 38 years all the paid carers I have tried have not been fit to look after my dog.
If you have a good one you are very fortunate.

Re: CARER FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Fri 23 Nov 2007 21:10Well you really should of complained to who ever sent the carers to you over the past 38yrs. From what I can make of not happys posting they are talking about a paid respite these are families who take someone in their own home to care for them. If you read it thats what it is saying. I would much rather my husband stays for a weekend now and then with a family that I have come to know than go in residential care. So I think these families like not happy do a great job.
