Claim on the DLA. It will not affect other benefits

A couple of important points here hks....Surely DLA is for those under 65..?.....Attendance allowance is for your Dad's age group.....either lower or higher rate. Also why should your Dad want to claim Carers Allowance ? Does he care for someone ? If I were you I would have a look at one of the many sites on the net ( or here, on PRTC) to try & gain a bit knowledge of the subject.....I really think that is your best bet...good luck

Thanks Jean

hi graham ...my dad has had dla for years before he was 65 he has has heart problems for over 10yrs bypass stents etc but is now in heart failure ...says on website if you claim it before 65 you carry on

i meant to ask if i or any one of my brothers would be able to claim Carers allowance as he now needs help with bathing shopping cooking etc and can only go ouside for short distances without feeling no well ....but he only gets the middle rate of mobilty just over £40 as far as i know

think id be better going to CAB

both my husband and I get attendance allowance, my husband gets carers premium-housing benefit, council tax-have been told I may be able to claim carers allowance but this can affect other benefits, whats the point. we are aged 70 and 72. don't know whether to bother trying.

HKS, i am a benefit advisor, you need to check if he is on Mobility first by calling 08457 123456. You will need him there with you . Then if he is on Mobility and you want to claim the care componant then ask if they can send out the forms. You may be notified that they will look at the claim again and they can/may higher/lower the rate he is getting. It will not effect your benefits. He cannot claim Attendance Allowance as he will lose his Mobility. He cannot claim Carers Allowance unless he is caring for someone. Hope this is ok

Jeanf - with regard to your Carers Allowance, it wont effect benefits because you wont get the carers allowance you will just have a premium on you Housben / council tax ben. If you claim Carers Allowance it may take you onto Pension Credit.
