The Princess Royal Trust for Carers as a partner in the National Young Carers Coalition has welcomed the announcement of new funding to protect children from excessive caring responsibilities following the announcement of the new Innovation Fund, yesterday.
The new fund, announced by Baroness Morgan at an event in Westminter, will provide £1million to help more voluntary sector young carers services to adapt the support they offer to get young carers out of inappropriate caring roles and to continue helping them in the future.
Announcing the new funding, Baroness Morgan said: "Young carers do a fantastic job, against the odds and often in circumstances that would seem impossible even to people of more mature years. We should salute them for what they do, and give them our support.
"But we must also recognise that they have their own lives to live, and we owe it to them not to allow their childhoods to be swallowed up by taking on inappropriate caring roles. I believe that by working together, all of us here today can prevent that from happening."
Funding will be delivered through an open grants programme co-ordinated by the National Young Carers Coalition and managed by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers as the budget holder.
Young carers lead at The Trust and chair of the National Young Carers Coalition (NYCC), Danni Manzi, added: "The Trust welcomes the announcement by the minister. £1m will provide a valuable starting point to improving support for many young carers and their families.
"It is a whole family approach which remains the real key to change for not only the young carer but also the person needing care."
The Young Carers Coalition is made up of organisations that work with young carers and their families including The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, Crossroads Care, Disabled Parents Network, The Children’s Society, Family Action, Action for Children and Barnardo’s. Young Carers International at the University of Nottingham and YMCA Fairthorne Manor are also involved in the coalition.
Further details about the programme, including application packs and closing dates, will be available in December 2009. If you would like to request an update email when this information becomes available, please send an email with the subject header: INNOVATION FUND to grants@carers.org.
